NEEDS TO HAPPEN NEXT. THAT IS A CONSCIOUS DECISION BY THE BOARD TO SAY WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO ADVANCE COMMUTER RAIL TRANSIT, CONNECT EDMOND OKLAHOMA CITY AND NORMAN OKC CITY STAFF SAY VOTERS COULD HAVE THE CHANCE TO GREENLIGHT A HUGE COMMUTER RAIL PROJECT AS EARLY AS 2025. IT’S BEEN AN IDEA FOR SEVERAL YEARS, BUT I’M TOLD THE PIECES ARE STARTING TO COME TOGETHER. THIS MAP IS A ROUGH DRAFT OF WHAT COMMUTER RAIL COULD LOOK LIKE IN THE METRO AREA. WE’RE WORKING ON SOME MODELING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE COMMUTER RAIL AND FREIGHT RAIL WORK TOGETHER. THE PASSENGER TRAIN LINE THROUGH EDMOND, OKC AND NORMAN WOULD USE EXISTING FREIGHT LINE TRACK, BUT IT WOULDN’T BE CONFINED TO THOSE TRACKS. WE ALSO HAVE STUDIES UNDERWAY THAT ARE LOOKING AT HIGH CAPACITY TRANSIT OUT TO THE WEST, SERVING THE AIRPORT, FAIRBRASS SAYS. OTHER COMMUTER RAIL LINES ARE BEING STUDIED RIGHT NOW AND THEN OUT TO THE EAST TO SERVE TINKER AIR FORCE BASE, OUR REGION’S LARGEST EMPLOYER. A BIG PART OF ALL THIS, A TRANSIT STATION NEAR THE NEW THUNDER BASKETBALL ARENA THAT HAS YET TO BE BUILT. THE IDEA IS TO BUILD IT ON THE NEW PROPERTY, SO IT’S IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE SANTA FE DEPOT BUS RAPID TRANSIT SERVICE, SPECIFICALLY TO SERVE THAT AREA TO COMPLEMENT WHAT IS GOING ON ACROSS THE STREET AT THE SANTA FE DEPOT. AND WHILE THE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY HASN’T DECIDED ON AN ELECTION DATE FOR THE PROJECT, THEY DO HAVE A MEETING LATER THIS MONTH WHERE THEY’LL DISCUSS PLANS FOR A RAIL LINE FROM DOWNTOWN OKC TO WILL ROGERS WORLD AIRPORT, AMONGST OTHER TOPICS THAT BOARD MEETING

The Regional Transportation Authority and Oklahoma City officials are working to make a commuter rail connecting parts of the metro a reality. The train could connect Edmond to Oklahoma City, or even to Norman. While they still have details to work out, the public could have a say in it in the next year.
