Marissa Byrd died in the crash near 19th Street. Her mother said she is still in shock from the chaotic night and is asking for change.
“Street racing is a problem in this area, and if you go sit on the highway 20 minutes, somebody’s going to be street racing," Misty Goldman, Byrd's mom, said.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol said two men were racing on the interstate when they hit two other cars and killed the 26-year-old.
“I got the message, and I started freaking out. I was crying. I had a feeling she wasn’t OK," Byrd's sister Kailey Goldman said.
The crash left carnage in its aftermath.
“They already are arrested. They have been booked into the Cleveland County jail. There has been two individuals," OHP Trooper Preston Cox said.
They were booked on first-degree manslaughter charges.
“She never talked bad about anyone. She was perfect,” Kailey said.
Byrd's family said they are reeling from the collision.
“She was loved by many. She was a good person, truly," Misty said.
OHP said they don't have any initiatives aimed at curbing street racing, but they pull drivers over when they see it. Byrd's mom said she wants to see more done.
“I think there needs to be more patrol. I think they need to be more strict. Something has to change. How many more people are going to be injured and killed before somebody is going to step up and do something?" Misty said. “I’m angry. I’m hurt. Of the whole Oklahoma City area, why my daughter?”
Her family has cars similar to the ones that were allegedly racing, and they had a message for the people who drive them, too.
“We have fast cars too, but there’s a time and a place for that," Misty said.
Byrd's mom said they are still figuring out what's next. A GoFundMe has been set up to help with the funeral.
