Residents at an Oklahoma City apartment complex were given less than one day’s notice that their stairs needed maintenance and they wouldn’t be able to use them.Get the latest news stories of interest by clicking here.The people living on the second floor of the complex didn't have many options. They could've either left their home or stayed inside until the work was done, and it’s not the first time tenants said they’ve dealt with this.“Not even 24 hours’ notice, I think it was around 11 a.m. yesterday morning,” said tenant Elena Cowles.Tenants at Quail Lake Apartments faced a tough decision Wednesday.“Either you have to stay inside all day, or you have to leave all day. No exceptions,” Cowles said. “You’re going to have no access to your steps once they start work until they end work. We don’t know how long it’s going to take … plan on being out all day.”KOCO 5 obtained a copy of the notice given to tenants. She lives with lupus, has kidney diseases and said she was able to plan around the maintenance to get to her doctor’s appointment on time.“Any day would be annoying, but let alone a day that I’ve been waiting for a doctor’s appointment to happen, and they say, sorry you have to deal with it,” Cowles said.KOCO 5 reached out to the apartment complex, but our requests for comment have not been returned. There was a similar problem at the same complex in April where a tenant found the stairs outside of her apartment completely gone."I was explaining I have to let my dog out, and I have an ultrasound appointment to go to, and I was told I should just reschedule,” said Kassidy Chappell, a tenant of the apartment complex, in April. "I just happened to glance up right before I would have gone down the stairs, and they were gone. They were completely just not there." Cowles said her husband decided to stay home with their dog all day, not knowing when he could leave.“I don’t know. I guess he’s got to learn to fly or jump or something like that ...
