A group of lawmakers set a goal to drain the Oklahoma swamp by forming a new caucus. The Oklahoma Freedom Caucus is being led by some of the most conservative lawmakers in Oklahoma, including state Rep. Jim Olsen and state Sen. Shane Jett. We are here to put taxpayers front and center, focusing on giving them more of their money back, getting better bang back and making sure government serves them and doesn’t rule over them," Jett, a Republican from Shawnee, said. The group, which has been labeled Oklahoma's most conservative state lawmakers by the Conservative Political Action Conference, announced the formation of a new group at the Oklahoma state Capitol on Tuesday afternoon. Oklahoma's Freedom Caucus is one of the newest local chapters of the national Freedom Caucus, a group of federal lawmakers who have made headlines for far-right positions and clashes with leading congressional Republicans. U.S. Rep. Josh Brecheen, a Republican representing Oklahoma's 2nd Congressional District, is a member."We are so far removed from the common sense of 20 and 30 and 40 years ago. This brand represents common sense," Brecheen said. The Freedom Caucus, aside from Democratic and Republican caucuses, will be the only partisan group of lawmakers at the state Capitol. Dusty Deevers serving as vice chairs. The group said there are too many areas where the Republican Caucus has come up short. "The establishment has refused to even hear in committee important Oklahoma Republican platform items like abolishing the income tax, abolishing abortion," Deevers, a Republican from Elgin, said. KOCO 5 reached out to leadership in both the state House and Senate for comment but did not hear back.
