The agenda includes looking at the accreditation status of several school districts, including Tulsa, and possibly suspending several teacher certifications. There also will be a vote to grant Barnsdall Public Schools an early end to their school year as well as possible funds to help the district recover from the deadly tornado that ripped through the area earlier this month.
Many people attending the board of education meeting are upset that the public comment portion has been changed. On Thursday, a sign-up sheet will be available for people who want to talk during public comment, and education leaders said speakers will then be chosen at random.
Last month, a woman was arrested during public comment at an Oklahoma State Board of Education meeting.
"For months, we have seen organized activists attempt to monopolize the public’s access to our open meetings. That ends today," State Superintendent Ryan Walters said Wednesday in a news release. "Everyone deserves an equal opportunity to have their voice heard at our meetings and (as) long as I preside over them, all Oklahomans will have that opportunity."
