'Slow and steady': Indianapolis Zoo holds annual Zoopolis 500 tortoise race head of the Indy 500
Ahead of the Indianapolis 500, the Indianapolis Zoo held what it refers to as "the greatest spectacle in tortoise racing" — though the contestants on the track were a lot slower than the race cars participating in the Indy 500.
Wednesday's event was the 45th anniversary of the zoo's annual "Zoopolis 500," which features tortoises with checkered flags across their shells as they race toward the finish line — a big platter of fruit, as shown in a video from WRTV.
The four tortoises that participated in the 2024 race are radiated tortoises. On its website, the zoo said the species gets its name as a result of a pattern on their shells, "which have star-patterned stripes radiating from the center."
For the Zoopolis race, the tortoises were temporarily renamed, taking on the names of professional drivers who will participate in this year's Indy 500, which is set for Sunday, May 26.
Helio, a tortoise that was named after previous Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves, took the checkered flag at Zoopolis 500, which was sponsored by the Indiana Dairy Association. The 500 Festival Princesses were also at the event, according to the zoo's website.
Helio was greeted in the winner's circle with some fresh fruit.
