WHAT WAS A CHAOTIC SITUATION. THE MCCLAIN COUNTY SHERIFF SAYS EARLY THIS MORNING A PATIENT WAS BEING FLOWN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH A STAB WOUND, BUT HE WOKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FLIGHT AND STARTED KICKING AND CAUSING DAMAGE. INSIDE THE HELICOPTER, HE COME AWAKE, BECAME AWAKE DURING THE FLIGHT, MAY HAVE JUST BEEN DISORIENTED, SCARED. THE MCCLAIN COUNTY SHERIFF SAYS THE VICTIM STARTED KICKING, DAMAGING THE INSIDE OF THE HELICOPTER AND FORCING THE PILOT TO MAKE A QUICK DECISION. THIS IS THE FIRST INCIDENT I’VE EVER I’VE BEEN IN LAW ENFORCEMENT 45 YEARS. FIRST TIME I’VE EVER HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING IN A HELICOPTER, IN A HELICOPTER, AND YOU HAVE A COMBATIVE PATIENT. I THINK PROBABLY THE PILOT DONE WHAT HE NEEDED TO DO. HE SAYS THE PILOT DECIDED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING FOR THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE INVOLVED. THAT’S WHEN MCCLAIN COUNTY DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO ASSIST WITH SECURITY. THE HELICOPTER LANDED NEAR THE DIBBLE CROSSROADS ON HIGHWAY 76 AND HIGHWAY 39. BUT BEFORE ANY NEARBY BUSINESSES WERE OPEN. The patient then began kicking, causing damage to the inside of the helicopter and forcing the pilot to make a quick decision. "He came awake during the flight and may have just become disoriented and scared," Offolter said. "This is the first incident I’ve ever seen. I’ve been in law enforcement for 45 years. First time I’ve heard of this happening in a helicopter." The pilot made an emergency landing for the safety of everyone involved. That's when McClain County deputies responded to assist with security. "In a helicopter, if you have a combative patient, I think the pilot did what he needed to do," Offolter said. This happened before any nearby businesses were open for the day. The patient then had to be transferred by ambulance to the hospital. Officials are still looking into possible charges against that patient for the damage to the helicopter. But as of Thursday, charges didn't seem likely.
