A medical helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing after a patient became combative Thursday morning. >> Download the KOCO 5 AppA patient was being flown to the hospital with a stab wound when he woke up in the middle of the flight, according to McClain County Sheriff Landy Offolter. The patient then began kicking, causing damage to the inside of the helicopter and forcing the pilot to make a quick decision. "He came awake during the flight and may have just become disoriented and scared," Offolter said. "This is the first incident I’ve ever seen. I’ve been in law enforcement for 45 years. First time I’ve heard of this happening in a helicopter." The pilot made an emergency landing for the safety of everyone involved. That's when McClain County deputies responded to assist with security. "In a helicopter, if you have a combative patient, I think the pilot did what he needed to do," Offolter said. This happened before any nearby businesses were open for the day. The patient then had to be transferred by ambulance to the hospital. Officials are still looking into possible charges against that patient for the damage to the helicopter. But as of Thursday, charges didn't seem likely.
