KID, WE USED TO COME TO GAMES HERE WHEN IT WAS CALLED OWEN FIELD, NAMED AFTER BENNIE OWEN, WHO WAS REALLY THE FIRST BIG TIME HEAD COACH HERE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA. AND THEN SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINE, IT TURNED INTO THE PALACE ON THE PRAIRIE. PALACE ON THE PRAIRIE. FROM BENNY TO BOB, BENNY TO BOB. BOB IS THE OKLAHOMA HEAD COACH WHO HAS WON MORE GAMES THAN ANYONE ELSE HERE. AND THAT’S WHEN IT BECAME MEMORIAL STADIUM. OKLAHOMA MEMORIAL STADIUM, IN ITS 100TH YEAR THIS SEASON. SO LET’S LOOK BACK AT SOME UNBELIEVABLE MOMENTS. OUR OWN COLBY TERRELL WITH THE LAST HUNDRED YEARS JUST BEHIND THESE DOORS IS THE HALLWAY THAT HOLDS OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL’S PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY. SIGN LIKE THIS ONE FROM DECADES AGO. AND OSU SAYS THAT WITH COUNTLESS PLAYERS HAVING SLAPPED THIS ONE, IT’S JUST A SMALL PIECE IN THE SAGA OF THE PALACE ON THE PRAIRIE. THE FIRST GAME WAS PLAYED ON OCTOBER 17TH, 1925. IT WAS A SEVEN TO NOTHING OU WIN OVER DRAKE, AND HERE WE ARE, 99 YEARS LATER, WE’LL BUY SOME TIME AND A TOUCHDOWN. SOONERS FANS, COACHES AND PLAYERS WILL CELEBRATE 100 YEARS AT THE PALACE ON THE PRAIRIE THIS FALL, BUT THE MORE THAN 80 000 SEAT STADIUM YOU SEE HERE TOOK TIME AND WORK TO GET HERE. IN 1925, THE UNIVERSITY BUILT THE 16,000 SEAT GRANDSTAND ON THE WEST SIDE OF OWEN FIELD AND OKLAHOMA MEMORIAL STADIUM WAS BORN AND LEGENDARY COACHES WERE AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE PALACE’S BEGINNINGS FOR SEVERAL YEARS PRIOR TO THAT, COACH OWEN HAD REALLY CAMPAIGNED FOR A STADIUM HERE ON CAMPUS, GOING BACK TO 1917, AND HE EVEN CREATED A BOOKLET CALLED THE STADIUM FOR OKLAHOMA, WHICH WAS BASICALLY PART OF THE PR CAMPAIGN TO GENERATE SUPPORT FOR THE PROJECT. THEY SAY A THIRST FOR OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL BROUGHT ON BY SUCCESS IS WHAT TOOK IT FROM THIS TO THIS TO THIS. AND AS THOSE SEATS EXPANDED AND EVENTUALLY BECAME A BOWL, THEY WON SEVEN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. BUT BEFORE ALL THAT CAME A WINNING CULTURE WITH COACH BUD WILKINSON INSTALLING THE LEGENDARY PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY SIGN IN THE 40S. YEAH, AS YOU CAN SEE, IT’S IT’S A LITTLE MORE SQUARE IN SHAPE THAN OUR CURRENT ONE IS, BUT NICE, HEAVY WOOD MATERIAL. I THINK THE SIGNIFICANCE OF OF OUR PLAYERS REACHING UP AND TAPPING THE SIGN, AND I’M SURE OUR COACHES DO TOO, IS A TO HONOR THE THE PAST ALL THE GREAT PLAYERS AND COACHES WHO HAVE COME BEFORE, BUT MAYBE ALSO TO GET A LITTLE BIT OF GOOD LUCK AND GOOD VIBES AS THEY HEAD OUT AND AND PLAY THEIR NEXT GAME OUTSIDE THE PALACE WALLS. IT’S HEISMAN PARK FULL OF OH SEVEN HEISMAN WINNER STATUES, AS WELL AS A FEW OTHER COACHES AND PLAYERS, WHICH OPENED IN 2005. THESE PLAYERS AND IN THOSE COACHES REPRESENT SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST THE SUCCESS ON THE FIELD. THEY ARE PILLARS OF OUR PROGRAM. OFTENTIMES PILLARS OF OUR COMMUNITY, AND WE’RE PROUD TO BE ABLE TO HONOR THEM THE WAY WE HAVE AND WITH THE COMING 100 YEAR CELEBRATION, THOSE STATUES SERVE AS A REMINDER. SITTING IN THE SHADOW OF THE PALACE ARE THE BEST OKLAHOMA FOOTBALL HAS TO OFFER UNTIL THE NEXT, YOU CAN WALK BY OR DRIVE BY JENKINS AVENUE ANY DAY, AND YOU SEE FANS JUST WALKING AROUND HEISMAN PARK READING THE INFORMATION ABOUT ALL OF OUR WINNERS AND TAKING PICTURES AND IT’S JUST A SOURCE OF PRIDE FOR NOT JUST FOR OUR FOOTBALL PROGRAM, B
