Updated: 8:00 PM CDT Aug 23, 2024
The new chapter begins after decades of nail biting touchdowns, game stopping tackles. He's not gonna get there and hoisting trophy after trophy iron, sharp iron. The sooner elections already cemented now, *** new path we're running towards the sec. The Cowboys saddling up to take the reins in the big 12. The Cowboys ace in the hole their man at the helm for two decades. It's been *** great run. It's been *** long one and an eager running back set on changing history. Also, Bono being in New York Koco coming straight to you from Norman and Stillwater as the college football countdown starts. Now, everybody welcome into the show tonight, the Koco college football kickoff. I'm Brian Keating alongside Hannah Hoover inside the Barry Switzer Center here on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. Are you ready for *** little college football? I've been ready for college football and I can't wait to see Oklahoma in the SEC. We'll talk *** lot about ou and the SEC, we'll talk *** lot about the Cowboys and *** brand new big 12. You know, Hannah, I sat down with the new offensive coordinator at Oklahoma. Seth Latrell is back with the Sooners and I spoke with Jackson Arnold's head coach back down in Texas. Learn more about the young quarterback and what we can expect to see from his leadership in this season. He was really good in high school. I hope he's really good here with Oklahoma. And then I of course, sat down with the head coach at Oklahoma State, Mike Gundy going on his 20th year. Hard to believe as the head coach of the Cowboys. All right. So let's get into it starting with the Sooners who are just fired up to be in the SEC. But their schedule is brutal with games against Alabama LSU, Texas and Tennessee. And we're just getting started and they have *** brand new quarterback in Jackson Arnold Arnold, want to go deep who is unproven, but has *** lot of arm talent as one of the top roots coming out of high school. Oklahoma is ranked number 16 on the *** P polls and number eight in the SEC. So look, there's *** lot of excitement for Oklahoma. It's *** brand new league for the first time in 100 years. But the question everybody around college football wants to know is Oklahoma sec ready? I, I really don't know how to answer that other than we're excited for the challenge as, as competitors, as *** football program. You know, Oklahoma, you know, isn't intimidated as ***, as *** football program. We, we're running towards the SEC I think that goes without saying Oklahoma has *** long list of legacy quarterbacks winning the Heisman trophy and there just so happens to be *** spot right here open for the next QB. Possibly. I spoke with Jackson Arnold's head coach from the guy to learn more about his leadership and who he was as *** high school player. Jackson Arnold, the didn't Texas native made his insurance as Oklahoma QB one in the Alamo with an off season to become with the tall task of leading you into their first season in the CC. What kind of leader is ou getting in Jackson Arnold for this 2024 season for us? He was the complete package. You're gonna see somebody that is absolutely capable to be successful in the SEC and I anticipate someone who will be successful in the SEC. Jackson Arnold is no stranger to the pressure of leading an elite program like Oklahoma. During high school, there were high expectations for the young quarterback who was thrust into *** high stakes game. He goes in, in 2019 against Austin Westlake in *** state championship game. Hadn't expected to go in. We had *** great, another great quarterback in Eli Stowers. He gets hurt early when you're 14. You get thrust into *** state championship game at the highest level in Texas. There's probably not *** bigger stage to be for *** 14 year old while there may be many question marks surrounding Oklahoma and the sec, we do know that Jackson Arnold is *** competitor at his core and he's got *** track record to prove it. That piece of really having *** lot thrown at him, being too able to survive that, learn from the early mistakes and then shine when he gets older and more mature, you'll see that. I anticipate seeing that. Well, if you're going to give one word to describe Jackson Arnold and you can elaborate on it and why I guess I would say, what would that word be? I'd say, I guess electric, you know, I think I would say if you ask me with the phrase, I say he is the, he, he's got the it factor just about anything that he does. He's pretty, pretty good at it and he's *** guy that you, that people want to be around. We're just one week away from the Friday night lights and seeing Jackson Arnold take the starting role for the first time at Memorial Stadium. I can't wait the Jackson Arnold era for that to begin next Friday night. Still quarterbacks tonight because, you know, in Stillwater, Mike Gundy used to be the quarterback for the Os U Cowboys. Now, he's going on his 20th year as the head coach at Os U and he's doing it in *** brand new league ou in the SEC and Oklahoma State in *** brand new big 12. So I talked to the head coach at Oklahoma State, Mike Gundy in Las Vegas. You've been *** proponent of the new Big 12 for *** long, long time. Um Why are you so confident? Our commissioner, he's um, highly intelligent. He's innovative. He'll make *** decision. So many people that are in *** leadership role won't make *** decision, make *** decision. When you don't make *** decision, you made the wrong decision and he's very bullish on, I'm gonna figure out *** way to make this happen. I'm gonna minimize the financial distributions of our schools and the sec in the big 10. I might not be able to get there, but I'm gonna get you closer and I'm not gonna listen to say that we can't do it here. That's what we have to have in this conference. I really believe this. He's the best conference or co commissioner in all sports. I'm just telling you for what he does. He does *** great job. That's why I have confidence in this league. What's your rivalry game gonna be now? And, and, and what do you think it can be or should be? So if the teams at the conferences stay the same in *** couple of years, we could see commissioners saying we're gonna play three games *** year where you play the same team every year. So let's just say geographically, they say, OK, it's gonna be Os U and TCU. It's gonna be Os U and Kansas State. It's gonna be Os U and Texas Tech. Ok. There's your three. They seem like the three. Well I'm saying, but that's, that could happen and I wouldn't be against that just because the fans want it. I think that's part one with Mike Gundy. We'll look back at the last 20 years and incredible moments with the Cowboys head coach later in the show. What do you think, Mike Gundy in 2005 when he took the job at Os U, as the head coach would say about the last 20 years, the history of OU football is just, it's ridiculous, right? With 50 conference championships, 14 of those came in the big 12 conference now as they head to the SEC. And if you go to the SEC, what does that mean? It means new road trips for OU fans to get excited about. We'll look at what you should do when you go on the road in the SEC. You know, Hannah, when I was *** kid, we used to come to games here when it was called Owen Field named after Benny Owen, who was really the first big time head coach here at the University of Oklahoma. And then somewhere along the line, it turned into the Palace on the Prairie Palace on the Prairie from Benny to Bob. Bob Bob is the Oklahoma head coach that's won more games than anyone else here. And that's when it became Memorial Stadium. Memorial Stadium in its 1/100 year. This season. So let's look back at some unbelievable moments. Our own Colby Terrell with the last 100 years just behind these doors is the hallway that holds Oklahoma footballs play like *** champion today. Sign like this one from decades ago. And o you says that with countless players having slapped this one, it's just *** small piece in the saga of the Palace on the Prairie. The first game was played on October 17th, 1925. It was *** seven to nothing uh ou win over Drake and uh here we are 99 years later, we buy some time and *** touchdown sooner. Fans, coaches and players will celebrate 100 years at the Palace on the Prairie this fall. But the more than 80,000 seat stadium you see here took time and work to get here in 1925. Um The university built *** 16,000 seat grandstand on the west side of Owen Field. And Oklahoma Memorial stadium was born and legendary coaches were at the forefront of the palace's beginnings for several years prior to that, coach Owen had really um campaigned for *** stadium here on campus going back to 1917. And he even created *** booklet called the stadium for Oklahoma, which was basically part of the pr campaign to uh generate support for the project. They say *** thirst for Oklahoma football brought on by success is what took it from this to this, to this. And as those seats expanded and eventually became *** bowl. They won seven national championships. But before all that came *** winning culture with Coach Bud Wilkinson, installing the legendary play like *** champion today sign in the forties. Yeah, as you can see, it's, it's *** little more square um, in shape than our current one is but, um, nice heavy wood material. Uh I think the significance of, of our players reaching up and tapping the sign and I'm sure our coaches do too is um *** to honor the, the past all the great players and coaches who have come before, but maybe also to get *** little bit of good luck and good vibes as they head out and, and play their next game outside the palace walls. It's Heisman Park full of ou seven Heisman winner statues as well as *** few other coaches and players which opened in 2005. These players and, and those coaches represent so much more than just the success on the field. They are pillars of our program, oftentimes pillars of our community. And uh we're proud to be able to honor them the way we have. And with the coming 100 year celebration, those statues serve as *** reminder. Sitting in the shadow of the palace are the best Oklahoma football has to offer until the next you could walk by or drive by Jenkins Avenue any day and you'll see fans just walking around house park reading information about all of our winners and taking pictures. And, um, it's just ***, *** source of pride for not just for our football program but for our university as well. Kobe Terrell Koco Five News. So *** week from now this is where everybody's gonna be tailgating. It's gonna be packed outside Memorial Stadium, which is, you know what they've been doing the last 100 years in the big eight and the big 12 for the most part. But now they got to go to the SEC, Hannah and that means new road trips. Is there anywhere, you know, you're just kind of dying go. I would love to go to LSU experience Death Valley. The fans are excited to say the least. That's *** nice way to put it. Uh And I think it'd be *** really fun match up to experience in person. So if you're going on the road to one of these new road trips in the SEC, here's what you need to know. And with new beginnings in the SEC means the sooners will be heading to some uncharted territory from what lays hidden in the bayou to the city that created homecoming. They'll stretch the field to the wide side. Here's what ou fans can expect is the away team in four new SEC stadium. Let's first head to Auburn where ou will go head to head against the Tigers. Sports director, Ryan Hennessy from our sister station in Alabama says their fan favorites are decades in the making and Auburn game day is quite the experience on the Plains is full of tradition that goes back decades. It all starts with the Tiger walk. The head coach leads the Tigers down to Jordan Hare Stadium on game day with around 20,000 fans lined up on Donahue drive to welcome their Tigers for game day. The tradition started in the 19 sixties then right before kickoff, all eyes are on the sky when the fans are in the seats before the game, the Eagle fly is the opening act. The eagle will fly around the stadium landing on the *** U at the 50 yard line. Another long time tradition how the orange and blue celebrate *** big win, go down to Toomer's corner and roll the trees with toilet paper. The legend was told that in the 19 sixties, Toomer's drug store on the corner would have the score of the Auburn game from *** telegraph. The employees would take the ticker tape after the win and put it on the power lines. Auburn isn't the only Tigers ou goes up against this season lurking in the swamps just waiting for the weekend is Louisiana State where game days are *** whole different ball game. LSU Tiger Stadium, Death Valley, the Cathedral of college football, no matter what you call it. The atmosphere in Baton Rouge on *** Saturday in the fall is unparalleled, but everyone knows the party starts well, before kickoff. And it's true what they say about southern hospitality. Seriously, go up to any tailgate and prepare to leave *** little more you up now, they might call sooner fans tiger bait. But don't be fooled plates of juba bowls of gumbo and many other creel delicacies. We pass her away and, well, Ns and said it best. You can smell the bourbon on the 50 yard line. Meanwhile, just over 300 miles north, welcome to the Sec Oklahoma. Well, get ready for the rebels hotty Totty uh cheer. Once you set foot on campus, you'll hear that throughout the day, especially on the grove. The legendary unique area with hundreds of tents where Ole Miss fans come together to get ready for the big game from their fans gather along *** trail that weave through campus called the Walk of Champions where the football team makes their way into the stadium and the vault will be rocking. It's one of the most underrated home field advantages in the Sec Columbia, Missouri. The suitors know it very well playing 51 times and cashing in 44 wins and just seven losses at, for field sports director, *** Jennings and meteorologist, Neville Miller, which is *** taste of what echoes throughout their memorial stadium. Well, if you're tailgating at the game, you want to get there early because they invented home. I'm sorry, what? Homecoming first and finest 113 years. We all right. That's right. The zoo is credited with inventing homecoming. And after the game, there are plenty of places that you can eat and drink. One of my favorites. Shakespeare's pizza is *** good pizza. Oh, yes. You have to go to Shakespeare's. Don't forget about fieldhouse Harpo's Willie's and the blue. All right, we got it. Well, back to the game, I must warn you no matter who ma who is playing the student section may break out in an obscene chants directed at *** school across the state line that won't be mentioned, Miz, and you're gonna hear *** lot of that as well. Welcome to the SEC Oklahoma has *** new offensive coordinator in Seth Latrell, but he is not new to you our very own. Brian Keating sits down with the new offensive coordinator to get the inside scoop, stick with us. You know, Hannah, when you walk in this building, it is remarkable the history of OU football with the seven Heisman trophies and all the national championship trophies. But I want to talk about this one right here, the 2000 national championship trophy because Seth Latrell was on that team and now he is back at Oklahoma. He's back in Oklahoma as *** new offensive coordinator and his family has *** lot of ties here in this room, specifically two trophies back to back his dad won that one in OU. Seth won that one at OU and I sat down with the brand new offensive coordinator who is in *** lot of ways, Mr Oklahoma, when you left, did, did you think you'd be back? Hopefully, you know, I always dreamed about coming back. You know, my dreams growing up were to, to play for the University of Oklahoma and then also be able to coach for the University of Oklahoma. Those were my two goals in life. And, um, after football I really wasn't ever to go play in the NFL or anything like that. I knew I wanted to be *** football coach and um, what *** better place. It's been more than two decades, but Seth Latrell has come back home. I mean, this is, uh, um, you know, the number one program in the country in my heart and my mind. And so, uh, you know, you wanna coach for the best and, and play for the best. I'm humbled and honored to stand here today after climbing the ranks as an assistant, Latrell spent seven years as the head coach at North Texas, taking over *** team that was one in 11 and then leading the mean green to six bowl games. II, I was proud of the way they gutted it out and obviously proud of the result. And then returning to Oklahoma as an offensive analyst in 2023 and promoted to offensive coordinator and returning to Norman Means where he played for John Blake and Bob Stoops and was *** captain for the Sooners in 2000. And Norman is where his dad played. Jim Latrell was *** full back and helped The Sooners win national championships in 1974 and 1975. I remember growing up, um, we, we had ***, uh, kind of ***, ***, it was like *** mounted wall in the, in the living room and had all those, uh, old game balls on it. And so we would sit in the living room and at night I go, uh, grab one of those game balls and, uh, we sit in the living room and we throw it back and forth to each other and just, um, I was eating up with it and it meant growing up sooner born and sooner bred in the era of Berry and the b it was around 8586 kinda, uh being able, my dad, uh, brought me to *** game and, and, um, uh, coach allowed me to go in the locker room, coach Switzer and, um, kinda hang out before the game and meet some of those players. It was, uh, uh, I was an all star, uh, starstruck if you're going to games in 8586. Does that mean you had the bos haircut? Like, did you have the, the, did you have the, you know, everybody, everybody had the, had the bos haircut. I, I actually got *** chance to meet him as *** young child, uh, kind of in that locker room. And so, uh, what *** great moment. That was, what do you remember about the 2000 season going down to, uh, the Orange Bowl and beating Florida State? Uh, well, something I'll, I'll never forget it. It was kind of one of those seasons to where you kind of built the momentum early. Um, but we peaked kind at the right time in that October, uh, finished out the season. Well, but we had to have uh some big time plays from some big time players, uh throughout that year in order to, uh win some of the. So we had *** lot of tight games. Um, but, uh we always found *** way to win and Seth shares with his father, *** unique distinction in the history of Oklahoma football. They are the only father and son to win national championships for the Sooners when you look around. I mean, you just didn't hear there's trophies and there's all the awards and accolades that could be in one building. But you and your dad being national champions here, that's, that's unique to you, you know, just playing the same position and being on the same team. My father did, they win two national championships and just, you know, that's what you heard growing up. And so getting that opportunity uh is ***, is *** blessing and, um, I'm, I'm proud of it from *** quarterback spot and it's *** lot to being back and, and having that logo on your chest and knowing what it means. And it's what do you tell guys when you recruit them just about ou family? It's *** brotherhood. Um, it doesn't matter if you play here and, uh, 1968 or, uh, 2000 or, or 2000, you know, 24. It's *** brotherhood. Stay with us on the college football countdown. Penny. You ready to go, you know, about 100 miles north of Stillwater. Let's hit the road. Let's go to still. I spoke with Ollie Gordon's coaches from high school and you spoke with Ollie Gordon himself. I got to sit down with Ollie Gordon. I talked to his head coach. You already saw part one with Mike Gundy. How about part two on his 20th season as the head coach at OS U and *** whole lot more as we continue to count down the football season right here. Welcome back to the show. We have made our way to Stillwater, Oklahoma inside Gallagher IA Arena and this is Heritage Hall, which is an amazing place because it's really everywhere you look, it's the history of Oklahoma State athletics. And you know, Hannah, we talked *** lot about Oklahoma being in *** brand new sec, but Oklahoma State is in *** brand new big 12 when you bring in both the Arizona schools, Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado, which sets up for *** very intriguing, I think race as far as the big 12 conference is concerned, definitely. And there's *** lot of new faces in this conference, but there's also some familiar ones you have Oklahoma State in Colorado in the big eight way back when and then Arizona State and Oklahoma State face it off the last two years. So there's some reunions for sure there, but Oklahoma State, they're ready to get back to the big 12 championship and this time when it last time they won it was 2011. So the Cowboys have been in the big 12 title game in two of the last three seasons. So there's only one goal in Stillwater and the Cowboys are ranked 17th in the country and number three in the big 12 preseason polls with 21 of 22 returning starters including one of the best players in the country. Ollie Gordon and their quarterback Alan Bowman who yes, will be in his seventh year of college football. Yes, seven big time expectations for the posts, you know, Mike Gundy is certainly lived *** full life here on the campus at Oklahoma State University. You go back to the 19 eighties when he was the quarterback. Talk about choices, one of his choices to hand it off to Barry Sanders, the Heisman trophy winner in 19 88 1 of the best players of all time. And then of course, the all time leading rusher here with the Cowboys Thurman, Thomas, an NFL Hall of Famer, by the way, Thurman Thomas. And then for the last 19 years, Mike Gundy has been the head coach of the Cowboys going on year number 20. So it's me and Mike Gundy part two of our conversation. Can you believe it's been 20 years? It's gone, gone by fast. Um, I can still remember Bob Barry Junior at year 10 saying, can you believe it? Year 10? We're both still here and I thought, you know, he would be going, can you believe it? We're doing this and it's year 20 I don't know why it came to me, but I guess maybe because 10 to 20. But, uh, it's been *** great run. It's been *** long one. It's tough to remember now, but Oklahoma State football didn't always look like this before Mike Gundy became the head coach. Cowboy football. Didn't look like this. Os U hadn't had *** 10 win season in almost two decades. In fact, the Cowboys had *** zero win, 10 loss seasons since the last time they won 10 games. Uh, this is my New York Yankees job. Um, at times in our profession, people will tell you you're not supposed to ever let administration know you're at your last stop. Well, I don't have *** problem with that because I'm so fired up to be here at Oklahoma State. But since January 3rd, 2005, Mike Gundy's helped transform Oklahoma State into one of the most consistent programs in the country. So the thing that I'm most proud of is over the last 20 years that we've built *** brand now that I believe people recognize from coast to coast. I understand Notre Dame, I understand their tradition. I understand the helmet and the logo, but we got *** logo too. During Gundy's tenure, the Cowboys have won 100 and 66 games, which is more than his four predecessors combined and he deserves that. The head coach who became infamous in 2007, come after me. I'm *** man, I'm 40 has been the big 12 coach of the year three times and he's taken the pokes to five New Year's six bowl games and won the Fiesta bowl twice. What do you think, Mike Gundy in 2005 when he took the job at OS U, as the head coach would say about the last 20 years, it would be difficult to convince him that it could have happened that we would be on *** stage where we've had *** number of teams that in my opinion, could beat anybody on any given day. And then we've had quite *** few years where we were legitimate top 10 in the country. We could play with any of the teams in the country in top 10. Now, we might not have been able to go toe to toe with the top two, but we could maybe three through 10 and then in the years where maybe we were rebuilding *** little bit. We were still pretty good and we were able to accomplish what I said from day one is that I wanted the fans to be able to come to the game and know that we had *** chance to win no matter who we played that. I think that I can comfortably say we've accomplished. The Cowboys have 11 wins against the top 10 under Gundy's watch and 40 wins against the top 25. Ladies and gentlemen, only Dabo Swinney at Clemson actively has more and Gundy has been *** part of what might be the biggest transformation at Oklahoma State. The remaking of Lewis Field into Boone Pickens Stadium, which was rededicated in 2009. It was *** wreck. I mean, it was, uh, rusted. Um, the facilities around it were not good, um, underneath, it was dirt gravel. Oh, it just wasn't good. I was in the offset day and I stood and looked at it. It's beautiful. So that makes me proud and you guys are hard to beat at Boon Picking Stadium. I, you know, you've said for *** long time, you wanted it to be like an sec environment and that's exactly what you guys have done. Very proud. You know, we're sold out, we sold out last year. We're sold out now and I wanted it to be that way because whether we like it or not, if you watch an sec game on TV, it looks like *** traditional college football game, pageantry, pom poms, cowbells. But I'm old school. To me that's college football. Now, we have the paddles and the chance and stuff that we do. We didn't have that. And so that's *** huge deal for me personally. That game day there is *** big deal. Get to the outside and it's turned into *** lot of wins at Boone Picking Stadium. Currently, the Cowboys have won 19 of the last 21 and Mike Gundy has the fifth most wins of any active head coach in the country. And still, you don't hear *** lot of talk about the Cowboys on the national landscape. Do you think you're underrated? I think that we get underrated every year. We don't do *** lot to make people think. Wow. So I saw *** statistic the other day, somebody sent me on my phone. I don't know whether it was the last 10 or the last 15 years. We had the best record in the big 12 conference in one score games. And because of that, I think people don't really think, I just think, gosh, they just won another game. I mean, we didn't dominate somebody. I think that plays *** factor. And then the other thing that we've, we've turned the tide *** little bit, but we went *** number of years and beat some teams that were considered to be way better than us over the last 1015 years. But people don't say, ok, you're better than them. Now, they still are gonna say these other teams are better. But the good news is we get to play the games and I think our players like that, I think they, they like that. Ok, we're not that good. Ok. Champions of the big 12 for the first time and Bela about to become Mayhem. Gundy's greatest achievement came in 2011 when the Cowboys had their best season in program history, finishing 12 and one with *** big 12 championship. What about you as *** coach? You know, all the national rankings and coaches, you think you're underrated for the last 20 years, you know, you know, the one thing I asked somebody one time, I couple *** couple of years ago, I said, do you think it's more impressive to win 11 games in Alabama or win nine games in Oklahoma State? I've grown up most of my life winning nine games in Oklahoma State was pretty tough. So that I answered the question that way. I've got all the credit, all the respect in the world for those coaches. But if you had to take one of those jobs and you had to win that many games at that school, which one would you take to say? I can probably do that before I can do that. I, I mean, pretty much everybody's wanted Alabama and, and Saban is *** heck of *** co no, no question. Because he's consistently done it for *** long time. He stayed up here. It's hard to do that. But is it more difficult to win 11 there or is it more difficult to win nine in Oklahoma State? Well, you've won nine more than anybody else by *** lot. And so, and 10 and, and, and so on and so forth. So, it sounds to me like you think maybe you are *** little underrated. So we, we, uh we've had fun with it though. It's been good. The Cowboys open the season against the number one team in F CS South Dakota State who are the defending national champions and who have won 29 games in *** row. So I wanna change directions *** little bit here tonight and it's interesting because for the first time since 1910, we're not gonna have *** bedlam football game, but I wanna talk about *** bedlam quarterback. I wanna talk about Josh Heel, who's the head coach at Tennessee who returns to Norman man, unique time going there as, as *** player and what we were able to accomplish. Um, great teammates, great coaches, *** lot of friends. Um You know, so I've always had um, great admiration for, for the people inside of that state. Um And, uh, for me, I'm not at Tennessee if I wasn't at Oklahoma beforehand. So, you know, Hannah, in about *** week, this place is gonna be sold out and people are gonna be going crazy and, and, and you know what the paddle people, you know, they get the paddles in Dover and they hit up against. That's what you do. I wanna join him. That looks like *** lot of fun. Well, if you've been to Memorial Stadium, you know, they get ratty there as well and you've definitely seen Mr Oklahoma. So our very own Andy Weber gives us an inside look at all. The super fans, football is an emotional sport on and off the field. You can hear it at Boone Pickens. We're the heartbeat of the stadium and it just gets everyone ready for the game and feel that Gaylord Memorial. And I just heard God speak to me and say, hey, I want you to go follow this team. Thousands of fans make up the Os U and Ou faithful. But when the TV, cameras are on some, just stick out *** Norman Antonia record or Mr Ou is hard to miss. It's *** vibe that I get and I feel that I change into *** whole another person. I can't describe it. Records been draping himself and Crimson and Cream for several years now, about four years ago. Probably. It's been *** little bit, I think after one game, he knew he had to get back to hear that boomer sooner, go back and forth to see them coming out the tunnel. Uh Just the crowd, everything about it is just amazing and you feel that atmosphere. Mr Lu became *** household name among all U fans. Pretty quickly credit that to his enthusiasm and his outfit set to get an upgrade this season. Now we have boomer sooner going on on the, we have the national champions all the years on it, ou everything on there and then on the pants, we have the signature boomer sooner and it's, it is fitted to me. Well, it's hard not to see Mr Ou 80 miles north in still water. It's hard not to hear the paddle people. The student in Oregon had humble beginnings. *** couple guys actually snuck paddles into the first game in 1999. And that's kind of how it was discovered now, boasts more than 100 members. It's all *** game, it starts, you know, the minute we step in and have paddles in our hands, so many folks want to get involved. It's hard to find *** space on the wall. Grad student, Alison Geckler and senior Haley Bolinger serve as president and vice president. We're having to switch off, you know, quarters, halves, however, individuals decide to do that with each other. But *** lot of it, we're having to switch off because we are just so big. They call themselves the heartbeat of the stadium for *** reason. Visiting teams take notice. We're just so loud. It's hard to block out. I feel like sometimes we get in their head. We've got *** few yelling at us from on the field. So I think we definitely get to them like any fan mis throw you and the p people got involved, cheer on their favorite team and watch *** game of football. But they've come to learn their presence at the games is more than that. Getting those, you know, freshmen involved. Now, um just helps build them as characters and getting them outside their comfort zone and letting them enjoy something, you know, for themselves. I tell people if I made you smile, made you laugh, made you dance, made you cry. I did my job for Koco five sports. I'm Andy Webber, stay with us on the Koco college football countdown because up next, he's the scariest man in college football with the ball in his hand and he makes no bones about it. Ollie Gordon wants to win the Heisman Trophy if I can come home with it in Oklahoma City have two Heisman winners. It'd be great. Two tight ends to go last season. Ollie Gordon led the nation in rushing with 1732 yards and he scored 21 touchdowns at Oklahoma State, but it's the touchdown in bedlam against Oklahoma to really get things kick started where he cuts to the left and down the sideline and dives into the end zone. That's what everybody remembers about Ollie Gordon in 2023. But he told me this year, he wants to be the first player since Barry Sanders to win the Heisman trophy for the Cowboys. What's your running style? How do you describe it? Uh, downhill and aggressive, two tight ends, Gordon keeps the play alive and he's into the end zone touchdown. Ali Gordon and the Cowboys mean k, yeah. Yeah, Lee always falling forward and then he's gone. I wanna go undefeated with my team, you know, be great, but just for my line in general, I wanna go two K for them, two K for them rushing, not all purpose is rushing off to Gordon. Tons of room around them is the Heisman trophy. *** goal of yours. Do you have you, do you think about that? Oh, yes, sir. When you look at it, I mean, I wanted Doug Walker this past year. Uh I plan on winning that again also, but I also plan on being in New York. You know, I feel like New York would be fun and if I can come home with it and Oklahoma City have two Highland winners, it'd be great when you think back at last season, what's the one play you see? Out of the pistol? I got *** couple. Here's Gordon one, ou when I score off, it's Gordon, I came right through and I jumped up behind my, uh, my centers block and he like walled the linebacker of the 10 and I jumped through right in between both of them before they failed. High line. Is he in touched it. What's the team game? I came off the backside, cut guard again, make some *** miss and my uh guard, my tackle had walled him down and I was free by myself, Jen or what was his name again? When Josiah Johnson came and killed. Yeah. Yeah. Came and flat line. The dude that was right there. So, hey, it's *** lot. I have *** lot, you know, Hannah, of all the great running backs to play here at Os U. Ollie Gordon is the first one to win the Doke Walker award. You know why? Because they didn't start giving out the award until 1990. That's right. Barry Sanders just missed the part there. But speaking of Ollie Gordon, I caught up with his high school coaches down at Eula's Trinity and they think he was underrated coming out of high school with just four stars. They knew his success right here at Oklahoma State was, it's just *** matter of time. Last year's Doke Walker award winner, Ollie Gordon first got his start in the DFW area at Euless Trinity High School. Did you know he was gonna be that big of *** player when he was in high school? We're not surprised at all. Really? Uh, he's always been from *** young age, able to play, you know, to be advanced, you know, like it his eighth or ninth grade year, really seventh grade year. He was as good as any ninth grader. We had, do you have *** favorite moment from high school where he kind of, he had *** breakout moment and you thought, wow, this guy is special. I was worried about him before his first varsity game, you know, no matter how ready you think kids are, you don't really know until that first game. And, uh, just before we got on the bus, he said I'm about to fall out and he did, you could say one word to describe Ollie Gordon, his character personality. What would you, what word would you? *** couple things? Number one, he's very loyal uh to his friends, to his coaches, to his community, to Trinity, Oklahoma State. Uh and that comes from his mother, she's *** great lady and, and does good, makes him work hard and does those type of things. So Lowell would be number one. Number two, Ollie enjoys uh the journey, working hard practice always had *** smile on his face. Uh and did *** really great job of understanding what *** Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday look like and working hard. And he was always fun to be around. What do you expect to see this year? From Molly Jordan? I think he understands. He's gonna have to step it up, you know, he's not *** secret anymore and he's already lived through that here, you know, he was *** young kid. And after one season of playing, everybody said we gotta, we gotta get ready to stop that kid when we play Trinity. You know, and so that was his junior and senior year here. He was *** marked man. You know, he's, he's that again. He's created that again for himself. And I think he thrives on that. E *** sports college football is *** big deal. It's been over *** decade since they released *** game, our very own Dakota whi caught up with teams from Oklahoma State and OU for *** bedlam matchup. The only one all year. Keep it right here as we continue to count down to the college football season. Really? The questions that everybody wants to know. Right. How many wins for the Sooners and how many wins for the Cowboys? And does either of them make it to the college football playoff? We will tell you next. So, Hannah, you know, it was like the college football video game that's brand new. The E ***. Have you played it yet? I have not played it yet, but I used to play with my dad way back when and I need to get back in the game. It would be fun. See, I haven't played either but we got to pull some strings to make it happen right here inside. Booming and said this is this, do that and let's face off. I'm, I'm ready to go. Uh, so look some experts at OU and Os UE Sports Gamers, they played against each other. It's the only Bedlam football game, you'll see this year. Dakota Wak is with the Sooners and Cowboys *** football games and pick off capturing the fun. That is college football, *** student from Norman and another from Stillwater here at the University of Oklahoma's E sports facility to compete. Head to head in E *** college football. 25. Hopefully my stars, you know, Nick Anderson, Billy Bowman and Stedman carry me. Well, I've seen him play before and I know he likes throwing it deep. The plan is to stop Ollie Gordon if I could do that, I think I'll win the first quarter starting with the band blaring Boomer sooner with the Crimson and cream out the gate and one of the biggest threats of the game, Ollie Gordon, *** top three player in this game leading America's brightest orange. I think that's something that Os U does really well is that they don't overuse Ollie moments of the first quarter. I was so worried about Ollie right there, bringing the pressure on both teams. The sack hurt *** lot. I'm just still trying to get *** feel for what he likes to play some back and forth of the second quarter, including this touchdown pass from Alan Bowman, but just moments later, *** kickoff touchdown return from wide receiver Jalil Farook for the Sooners. And what's *** college football game without *** halftime interview? Now, o you go away, can you tell me what are you looking for going to the rest of this. Uh, we gotta be cleaner with the ball. I threw *** pick in the second quarter that really, really cost us notice that he's not abusing Ollie Gordon. So I'm thankful for that. Uh, I'm just hoping to put more points on the board. You got this man, keep going the third quarter, bringing plays. You'd see straight from real stadiums. *** big thing about this game, seeing their classmates in *** video game. I love Brennan. He's been at school the same time. I have great guy. One of the nicest people I've ever met Nick Anderson and Billy Bowman, but they're like pretty normal people. Today's field, *** new facility debuting at OU this year while it's all fun and games. The competition is *** first down run on the doorstep. Heinz *** leader within the gamers of Os U says he plays multiple hours *** day, but his biggest lift right now is getting their club into *** full on program. So everything that we have developed or that we're able to run is completely controlled by the students, the students here competing and going into the final quarter, it may not be too close, but Os U has *** goal to hit double digits and I feel like I have to force *** lot of things that coming just *** couple of minutes later. This is one of those days that you learn from it satisfying. But ultimately, the game ending with handshakes and *** win for the Sooners post game. The triumphant sooner praised his team on offense. Jackson Arnold looked like *** superstar. Hopefully he plays just like that in real life. For more information on these E sports programs, we have links to their websites for more information on how to get involved in Norman Dakota WKC five. I don't know. Hannah, judging by that, I think Oklahoma might be ready to be national championship. It looks like it. Uh, uh, the, the all important question going into 2024. What do you think about the sooners? How many wins? What can they do? Well, if they get nine wins or 10 wins? I think they made the college football playoff because that schedule is not forgiving to say the least they have Tennessee. Uh, they've got Texas. I mean, it's just, it's Alabama LSU. The list goes on and so with that said, they've got, you know, Jackson Arnold, best case scenario. He has an amazing season. They have *** veteran presence on the defense. Danny Stetson, Billy Bowman junior, uh, if they can win nine games, it could be dangerous if Jackson Arnold plays great. O US got *** chance to win nine. II, I think that, and that depends if he plays great. They're gonna be really good as far as Oklahoma State right here. One of the favorites for the big 12 championship. Yeah, one of the favorites for sure. Ollie Gordon. It's going to be his show gun. He mentioned that he's going to have *** lot of carries, but they also have *** great offensive line and *** veteran quarterback, seven years coming up on it, Alan Bowman. So they're set to have *** really big season as well. They won 10 games last year. They played for the big 12 championship if they don't win 10 with this group and all the vets, I think it will be *** huge disappointment. But here's the, I think they will win 10 games. I think they will get back to the big 12 championship game. And I think they've got *** real chance to be the best team in this league and, and maybe get to the college football playoff football seasons here. I can't wait, I can't wait either. So that's it. Hannah. I guess that means it is time for college football. I'm so glad that it's here. Friday night lights are happening at Memorial Stadium, Oklahoma versus Temple and then Saturday right here at Boone Pickens, we'll have South Dakota State. They're the number one F CS team. They'll be tough. But college football is here. Thanks for watching everybody for Hannah Hoover. I'm Brian Keating inside Boone Pickens Stadium. It is time for college football.
