YOU CAN SEE RIGHT HERE THERE ARE ALREADY TONS OF FLOWERS THAT HAVE BEEN LAID HERE AT THE INTERSECTION WHERE THAT 19 YEAR OLD STUDENT WAS HIT. BUT POLICE TELL ME THEY DO HAVE A SUSPECT IN CUSTODY. THE INITIAL REACTION WHEN YOU JUST TOLD ME, LIKE IT IS A BIT QUITE SHOCKING. LIKE, NOT EVEN LIKE HEARING ABOUT IT. LIKE I’VE NOT HEARD ANY WORD OF MOUTH OF THAT AT ALL. SOME STUDENTS AT OSU SHARED THEIR THOUGHTS AFTER A 19 YEAR OLD STUDENT PASSED AWAY. SHE’S HIT BY A DRIVER WHO THEN TOOK OFF. I CAN’T REALLY DESCRIBE THE FEELING THAT THE FAMILY MUST BE HAVING BEFORE THE SUN WENT DOWN, FLOWERS HAD ALREADY BEEN PLACED AT THE INTERSECTION OF MONROE AND CANTWELL ON THE NORTH SIDE OF CAMPUS. THE STILLWATER POLICE DEPARTMENT CONFIRMED THE VICTIM WAS THE SISTER IN LAW OF AN SPD OFFICER. YOU COULD JUST BE LIKE, FOR EXAMPLE, JUST ME, LIKE A REGULAR PERSON. I COULD BE WALKING AND IT COULD JUST HAPPEN TO ME OUT OF NOWHERE, OSU POLICE TOLD ME THE DRIVER OF A PICKUP TRUCK LEFT THE SCENE AFTER THE STUDENT WAS HIT BEFORE 10:00 THURSDAY MORNING. THEY SAY SHE WAS JUST TRYING TO CROSS THE ROAD. UNFORTUNATELY, IN THIS CASE, SHE SAID SHE WAS IN A CROSSWALK AND SHE GOT STRUCK BY A VEHICLE WITH THE HELP OF STILLWATER POLICE. THE VEHICLE WAS WAS FOUND ABOUT A MILE AND A HALF AWAY FROM THE ORIGINAL COLLISION SCENE. WE WENT OVER AND CHECKED OUT THE VEHICLE AND PLACED HIM UNDER ARREST, AND WE ARE HOLDING HIM FOR LEAVING THE SCENE OF A FATALITY FATALITY ACCIDENT. OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GOING OUT TO THE FAMILIES AND IT’S A TRAGIC ACCIDENT. UM, IF THEY SHOULD HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, ANYTHING, THEY CAN GIVE US A CALL NOW. Students described the emotions on campus after the student was struck by a driver, who then took off. “You can’t really describe the feeling that the family must be having," said OSU student Clayton Bonds. The Stillwater Police Department confirmed that the victim was the sister-in-law of a Stillwater officer. “You could just be a regular person. You could be walking, and it just happens out of nowhere," said OSU student Coll Dracub. OSU police said the driver of a pickup truck left the scene after the student was hit just before 10 a.m. They said she was just trying to cross the street. “Unfortunately, in this case, she was in a crosswalk and was struck by the vehicle," said OSU police Chief Leon Jones. With the help of Stillwater police, the vehicle was found about a mile and a half from the original collision scene. "We checked out the vehicle and placed him under arrest, and we’re holding him for leaving the scene of a fatality accident," Jones said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family in this tragic accident. If they have any questions or anything, they can give us a call."The suspect is a 21-year-old man.
