Law enforcement is mourning the loss of one of their own after an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper died from pancreatic cancer. Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials said Lt. Brian Fugate died on Sunday after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He worked with the agency for nearly two decades; and in that time, he was honored for his service. "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Lieutenant Brian Fugate," Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials posted on social media. "Lieutenant Fugate passed away on September 1 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer." The Oklahoma Highway Patrol honored Fugate in May 16 honoring him for his response to an incident from a few months earlier. On March 20, 2016, Fugate and other law enforcement agents were searching for a murder suspect near Pontotoc County. At some point, Fugate spotted the suspect near the junction of State Highway 3 and State Highway 48. Fugate tried pulling over the suspect, but he didn't stop and sparked a pursuit. The suspect fired at Fugate during the pursuit, hitting the trooper's vehicle. "For his courage under fire and his quick and correct decision making in this volatile situation which involved many law enforcement officers, Trooper Fugate is honored with a Chief’s Award," the Oklahoma Highway Patrol posted in May 2016. On Monday, law enforcement agencies like the Grady County Sheriff's Office honored Fugate and extended its prayers. The Hopewell Fire Department also said Fugate's "absence will be deeply felt." Funeral services for Fugate have not been announced.
