Getting to and from Tulsa may be harder than normal this weekend because roadwork on the Turner Turnpike is ramping up and closing down the road for hours.Crews are putting up bridge beams this weekend, possibly causing headaches to motorists wanting to use the Turner Turnpike.Get the latest news stories of interest by clicking here."That bridge was built in 1953 when the Turner Turnpike was built," Lisa Shearer-Salim, a spokesperson with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, said. "So, it was an original bridge to the system. It has met its life span at 71 years."The bridge near Stroud is now set to be replaced as part of the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority's Access Oklahoma Plan. "Starting tonight at 9 p.m., westbound I-44 Turner Turnpike will be closed between State Highway 99 in Stroud and the Stroud service plaza about a mile and a half up," Shearer-Salim said. The westbound lanes of the turnpike will be closed overnight on Friday, and the eastbound lanes will close overnight on Saturday. The construction is expected to take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and OTA officials said drivers will have to take a detour.>> Download the KOCO 5 App"They will need to exit to State Highway 66, and then they can get back on the Turner past the closure," Shearer-Salim said. OTA officials also stated that this is an important step for the future widening of the turnpike to three lanes each way. While the lanes are closed, some resurfacing will also be carried out.
