Authorities urge safety first during Labor Day weekend celebrations

While many Oklahomans are out and about during the Labor Day weekend, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said they want people to think about safety.

ISN’T ALWAYS THE SAFEST. YEAH, AND THAT’S BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO FIND WAYS TO JUST BE OUTSIDE AND ENJOY IT. WE’RE HERE AT LAKE HEFNER, WHERE MANY HAVE JUST BEEN WALKING BY CYCLING BY EVEN KITEBOARDING FISHING. NOW, THERE’S A LOT OF THINGS IN THIS WEEKEND. OKLAHOMA HIGHWAY PATROL SAYS THEY WANT YOU TO BE SAFE. NOW THEY’RE EXPECTING MANY PEOPLE TO BE OUTSIDE ENJOYING PLACES LIKE LAKES OR RIVERS OR PARKS. BUT THERE ARE SEVERAL DANGERS YOU NEED TO LOOK OUT FOR. AND ONE OF THOSE BEING DROWNINGS. OHP SAYS YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE SAFETY MEASURES IN PLACE BEFORE YOU’RE OUT ON THE WATER. NOW THAT INCLUDES LIFE JACKETS, FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, AND MORE. EVEN ALSO A WHISTLE IN CASE YOU’RE OUT ON THE LAKE AND THEY NEED TO FIND YOU. NOW, ACCORDING TO THE OKLAHOMA HIGHWAY SAFETY OFFICE, IN 2021, AROUND 15 CRASHES TOOK PLACE ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND INVOLVING ALCOHOL AND A FEW OF THOSE WERE DEADLY. NOW, OHP SAYS THEY HOPE YOU’RE CAUTIOUS FOR NOT ONLY YOURSELF, BUT FOR OTHERS, WHETHER IT BE ON THE ROAD OR ON A LAKE. THE MORE PEOPLE THAT ARE OUT THERE, THE CHANCES INCREASE FOR SOMETHING BAD TO HAPPEN. YOU KNOW, PEOPLE GET OUT THERE ON THE LAKES AND THEY THEY DON’T DRINK RESPONSIBLY. AND WHEN YOU MIX ALCOHOL WITH BOATING AND YOU’RE IN A BOAT THAT DOES NOT PROPERLY EQUIPPED, OR YOU HAVE PEOPLE WHO HAVEN’T BEEN EDUCATED ON WHAT TO DO OUT THERE, AND THEY THINK THEY KNOW WHAT THEY’RE DOING, IT’S JUST A RECIPE FOR DISASTER. NOW SAFETY AGENCIES, THEY’RE OUT THERE THIS WEEKEND JUST GOING AT IT ALREADY. THE OKLAHOMA CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT SAYS THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND THEY’VE ALREADY HAD MANY CALLS. JUST TRYING TO MAKE SURE THEY’RE OUT THERE FOR YOU
