Just before 11 p.m. on Friday, Edmond officers responded to a suspicious subject call near Three Stars and Woodcreek Roads after a caller told a dispatcher there was a person in their backyard.
"The person reported that they saw somebody in their backyard that they didn't believe had left the area," said Sgt. James Hamm, with the Edmond Police Department.
When police arrived, they instead found a person on the balcony of the caller's home. Officers at the scene tried talking to the person, but they reportedly pulled out a gun and shot at police.
Officers opened fire, striking and killing the person on the balcony.
KOCO 5 asked Edmond Police Department officials if there was a reason the person was on the balcony.
"That's something we're looking at just to determine if there's a relationship between the person that called us and the suspect,” Hamm said. "We're trying to piece together what happened, what led this person to come to the residence and determine anything else that may have happened."
Moments before the shooting, a neighbor witnessed the scene.
"I heard them start yelling, 'What are you doing up there? Get down. What are you doing up there?' Then they started shooting," Olivia Roberts, who lives nearby, said.
Many neighbors in the area said they didn't know what happened at the time, but Roberts was outside walking her dog just two houses away from the scene.
"I ran down there and hid for a couple of seconds until it got quiet, and then I made my way back to my house," Roberts said. "I went inside and was crying to my mom about it. I couldn't sit still and had a lot of stress and anxiety going on."
KOCO 5 tried speaking to the residents of the house where the shooting took place. They were very emotional as the worked to clean up what was left.
"There were also other people outside in the neighborhood at the time. Thankfully, they're all OK. There aren't any injuries to anybody else," Hamm said.
The officers involved in the fatal shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
No other details have been released.
