Powerful earthquake hits off far east coast of Russia, though no early reports of damage

Powerful earthquake hits off far east coast of Russia, though no early reports of damage
So the earthquake was about *** 4.8 magnitude event. Its epicenter is in Lebanon, New Jersey, which is about 40 miles from here. And the reason people are feeling it is because it's just about three miles beneath the surface, which makes it *** relatively shallow earthquake. And that's why even though the energy is not that big, we all got to feel what it was like to be in an earthquake. So the epicenter being closer to the surface means there's more up and down in the earthquake and that's why more people perceived it and it bothered buildings less. Yeah, the New York building code included earthquake provisions in the nineties and it makes buildings more flexible. Um but it isn't the main force. They have to withstand the main force, especially for tall buildings in New York is wind, not earthquake on the order of magnitude. So I felt this earthquake felt like uh furniture moving. Um then it uh because it proceeded over *** number of seconds. I knew it was an earthquake and then I wasn't frightened right when you know what it is, it doesn't scare you. Um 911 on the other hand, I didn't know what was going on and it was quite scary.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is a port city of more than 181,000 people surrounded by volcanoes and sits across a bay from an important Russian submarine base.

The U.S. National Weather Service's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu initially warned that hazardous tsunami waves were possible for coasts within 300 miles (480 kilometers) of the earthquake epicenter, but later announced the threat had ended.

The center said minor sea level fluctuations could occur in some coastal areas near the earthquake site for several hours.
