Seven-time Olympic medalist Shannon Miller reacts after Simone Biles breaks her medal record
In a historic moment for gymnastics, Simone Biles has surpassed Shannon Miller's long-standing record of seven Olympic medals. Biles and Miller had been tied at seven since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Biles clinched her eighth Olympic medal at the Paris 2024 Games when the U.S. women's artistic gymnastics team won the team final event on Tuesday, cementing her legacy as one of the sport's greatest athletes.
Miller, who reached seven medals at the 1996 Atlanta Games, expressed her admiration and support for Biles and the Team USA Olympic champions in an interview with CNN.
"I love what this team did and by Simone getting that eighth medal, she's just inspiring so many young people, but also, all of us to go after our goals and to just build big goals," Miller said.
Biles took home a gold medal along with teammates Suni Lee, Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles, but still has four more events to go in Paris — individual all-around, beam, vault and floor. Miller is looking forward to seeing more history being made by Biles and the other competitors as the Olympics continue.
"I love the girls, they have each gone individually through some really tough things in the last four, eight years, on this long road. So to capture the gold last night and put on a really awesome show of difficulty and skill, it was awesome," she said.
When asked about the coverage of this Olympics as a "redemption tour" for the Team USA women's artistic gymnastics competitors, Miller had thoughtful insight on how being an athlete is always about proving yourself.
"I feel like as an athlete you're always failing. You're falling off the beam, you're missing the mark. That's part of the process, I feel like that's part of the journey and you learn that earlier on," she said. "Your career is almost always about redemption and 'I can do this.' "
In an Instagram post after the U.S. win, Miller shared her happiness and pride for the young women.
"My heart is so happy!!! This team has been through so much on the long road to this gold. And they are simply amazing, so much fun to watch. And they won by nearly 6pts!!!! That’s nuts! They are an inspiration to so many who face obstacles and find a way to keep going and ultimately conquer that goal. CONGRATULATIONS!!!" the post said.
