Around 2 a.m., crews responded to a house fire near Northwest 16th Street and Rockwell Avenue. When they arrived, they found a small apartment built on the property behind the house on fire.
Fire department officials said a woman escaped, and two cats were inside the home. One of the cats, however, did not make it.
"When we arrived on scene, we saw heavy flames showing. We were able to stop it from extending to the house. Everyone was able to make it out of the structure," acting District Chief Jamie Huffman said. "There's no injuries to report on civilians or firefighters. We did have one cat fatality. It was inside the structure."
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
