CLOSE TO HOME? YEAH. 13 YEAR OLD AMANI YOUNG WAS STAYING AT A FRIEND’S HOUSE HERE IN THIS NEIGHBORHOOD BEHIND ME WHEN SHE WAS SHOT AND KILLED. NOW, NEIGHBORS IN THE AREA SAY THEY ARE KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON THE NEIGHBORHOOD. AND I CAME OUT AND I SAW THE TAPE. I SAID, OH MAN, SOMETHING’S GOING ON. NEIGHBORS IN A NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA CITY NEIGHBORHOOD REACTING TO THE DEVASTATION OF A 13, YEAR-OLD, WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED EARLY MONDAY MORNING. WE KNOW THERE WERE A NUMBER OF PEOPLE THERE AT THE RESIDENCE WHEN THE SHOOTING OCCURRED, AND AS FAR AS MY NEIGHBORHOOD, YOU KNOW, WHEN PEOPLE GO, OH, NEVER HAPPENED AND THEY DIDN’T PUT ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN ANY NEIGHBORHOOD AT ANY GIVEN TIME. OKLAHOMA CITY POLICE SAY 13 YEAR OLD AMANI YOUNG DIED AFTER BEING SHOT WHILE AT A FRIEND’S HOUSE. SHE WAS TRANSPORTED TO AN AREA HOSPITAL WHERE, SADLY, SHE PASSED AWAY. THE TEEN WOULD HAVE BEEN 14 THIS SATURDAY. SHE ALSO WENT TO OKLAHOMA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THE DISTRICT RELEASING A STATEMENT SAYING, QUOTE, OKC IS HEARTBROKEN TO LEARN OF THE PASSING OF AMANI YOUNG. MOST RECENTLY, A STUDENT AT JOHN MARSHALL ENTERPRISE MIDDLE SCHOOL. CRISIS COUNSELING IS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS AND STAFF WHO NEED IT. WE WILL KEEP HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN OUR THOUGHTS DURING THIS DIFFICULT TIME. INVESTIGATORS INTERVIEWED EVERYONE AT THE HOME AND WITNESSES, BUT SAY SO FAR NO ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE. POLICE NOT RELEASING TOO MANY DETAILS AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. AND I’M SORRY TO THE FAMILY THAT THAT YOUNG LADY AND POLICE ALSO COULDN’T SAY WHY SHE WAS SHOT OR WHAT LED UP TO IT, BUT THEY DO SAY WE’LL KNOW MORE INFORMATION IN THE COMING DAYS. "Now, as far as my neighborhood, people go, 'Oh, it never happens in our neighborhood.' Anything can happen in any neighborhood at any given time." Young was visiting a friend's house when the shooting happened. It wasn't clear who fired the weapon or what exactly led up to the shooting. "We know there were a number of people there at the residence when the shooting occurred," MSgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department said. The teenager would have turned 14 on Saturday. "She was transported to an area hospital, where she later passed away," Knight said. "OKCPS is heartbroken to learn of the passing of A’moni Young, most recently a student at John Marshall Enterprise Middle School. Crisis counseling is available to students and staff who need it. We will keep her family and friends in our thoughts during this very difficult time," the district said in a statement. Investigators interviewed everyone at the home and witnesses, but so far, no arrests have been made, according to police. Additional details were not released as the investigation continues. "I'm sorry to the family that that young lady," Asberry said. Police said more details are expected in the coming days.
