Oklahoma and our country lost a great statesman in Sen. Jim Inhofe and public servant whose legacy will endure the test of time.
Sen. Jim "Mountain" Inhofe died peacefully with his family at his side on Tuesday, July 9 at the age of 89.
As I reflected on how best to describe Inhofe, I chose the word "statesman," which is defined as a "wise, skillful and respected political leader." He was certainly that and more.
In a political career that spanned over 40 years, including positions of leadership at the city, state and federal levels, Inhofe retired from public office as the longest-serving U.S. senator in Oklahoma history.
He was an Army veteran and a vocal advocate for our military. Inhofe served as chairman of the Armed Services Committee, passing the National Defense Authorization Act that ensured military funding. He was later named in his honor upon retirement.
Throughout Inhofe's time in Washington, he fought to protect our military bases and was instrumental in bringing millions of dollars to Oklahoma bases.
He was a staunch conservative and a fierce defender of the Constitution. That was evident when he followed his oath to the Constitution and certified the 2020 election results despite pressure from his own party to challenge the results.
Inhofe loved Oklahoma and felt an enormous responsibility to the people of his state at all levels of his public service.
I had the privilege of meeting with the senator frequently over the years and found him to be a man of high character and integrity, true to his oath of service, willing to hear differing opinions and never without an opinion of his own.
Oklahoma and our country lost a great statesman in Inhofe and public servant whose legacy will endure the test of time. Our condolences to his family. Rest in peace, senator.
