In an election year, it can seem like we are so divided as a country and as a people.
But, as we celebrate Independence Day and everything the holiday stands for, let us be reminded of what brings us together as a country – our shared freedom.
In 1776 when the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on that July 4, they pushed for freedom. Many believe the Declaration of Independence is the most impactful statement on human rights in history, especially the second sentence.
To paraphrase, it says we are all created equal and are given the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This statement became the moral goal for all of us to strive for as a nation.
As we celebrate Independence Day, let us not forget those military men and women who have fought and those who continue to protect our freedom.
Let us respect individual freedom and work together to find what unites us rather than what divides us. With better understanding comes unity.
We live in the greatest country in the world, and as we celebrate Independence Day, let's focus on what unites us rather than what divides us.
