Impacts in our weather are coming soon

Chief Meteorologist Damon Lane shows what happened in the past 6 strong El Nino events and how it impacted our summer season.NOAA just announced that El Nino, which impacted our weather in the recent months, is officially over and we are now in a period where we are not being impacted by either El Nino or La Nina. What is El Nino/La Nina? It has to do with the changes in ocean temperatures between South America and Australia and how it displaces the jet stream to impact our weather here in The United States. The El Nino event we just ended was considered a strong El Nino event, which we have only had 6 times since the 1950s. So, what happened during our summer months after coming out of a strong El Nino? For Oklahoma, 4 of of those 6 summers after El Nino were wetter than normal and 5 of those 6 summers were warmer than normal. That would give us a really good chance for this summer being hotter than normal and a good chance for us being wetter than normal. Looking deeper into the year, La Nina is most pronounced during the winter months and will likely play an even bigger role in our weather come December,January and February.
