Monday is Memorial Day – a day set aside specifically to honor the heroes in military who paid the ultimate price and gave their lives for our country and for us.
We hope you take time this weekend through Monday to pause and reflect on the sacrifices these brave men and women made to defend our freedom.
May also is Military Appreciation Month, which is a time to honor the service of all members of our military. There's no doubt you have someone in your life who has served or is serving now.
Military service is part of who we are as Oklahomans. The Sooner State is home to six military bases with a population of 20,000 personnel.
According to the Department of Defense, Oklahoma has nearly 20,000 active-duty service members and another 20,000 National Guard and Reserve members. Our state is also home to more than 240,000 veterans.
Some of them work right here at KOCO 5, and we're a proud military-ready employer. You see some of our veterans every day, like Meteorologist Jonathan Conder and Sky 5 Pilot Chase Rutledge, and there are many more behind the scenes.
We want to take the time to thank them and every person has served our country and those civilian workers who support our military.
Thank you for your service. Thank you for your sacrifice. And thank you to your families.
For those who paid for our freedom with their lives, we honor them this Memorial Day weekend.
