From forging documents to escape prison to biting a police officer after being arrested for a forged check, fraudsters will go to wild lengths to get what they want.
In this new episode of "Crimes, Cons and Capers," investigators race to call their bluff before it's too late.
"Criminals turn to doing things like forging documents to get what they want because, in the short term, it's easier," said legal analyst and practicing defense attorney Beth Tibbott. "They're just willing to take the risk."
Watch how each faker is unmasked with expert commentary from Tibbott and John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor and former NYPD detective Michael Alcazar.
Forging out of Jail
Two men are serving life sentences without parole in a Florida prison when, out of nowhere, the local clerk of courts office receives documents stating their sentences have been reduced.
Both inmates walk out free. But the victim's family isn't buying it and asks the District Attorney's office to investigate. Investigators soon discovered the release papers were forged.
"Typically, most prisoners either break through the walls, or scale the walls, or secrete themselves in laundry to be transported out," Alcazar said. "So this case is pretty unique and pretty savvy."
Dupe and Dash
Police respond to reports of a forged check at a bank in South Carolina. Once on scene, they run the suspect's background check and discover he has an active arrest warrant. They handcuff him and place him in the back of their patrol car.
He is then left alone. The suspect manages to get his handcuffed hands in front of his body, jump into the driver's seat of the patrol car and drive off. This sparks a wild goose chase between the suspect and police officers that ends with the suspect biting the police officer in the neck and thigh.
"I just can't, for the life of me, understand why anyone would just keep making it worse and worse and worse," Tibbott said.
Haus of Deception
Homeowners living abroad hire a company to renovate their second home in Florida.
They're in for a shock when the caretakers arrive at the home to find the locks have been changed. They later discover the house has been sold through a quit claim deed by a man the homeowners have never met — let alone spoke to.
After further investigation, detectives discover the suspect has been taking ownership of three other properties through forged quitclaim deeds. The suspect was apparently living in one of the houses.
"The owners have to be vigilant and maintain their property," Alcazar said. "Make frequent visits, that the people they're renting the homes to still live there."
