A dozen of the nation's largest news organizations have called on President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump to participate in televised debates ahead of the 2024 election in an open letter published this week.The letter was signed by a group of major broadcast, cable, and print outlets.Despite calls from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, Trump refused to participate in all five Republican debates during his previous campaign. However, Trump is now urging Biden to join him on the debate stage.“Look at this empty podium right here. You know what that is. That’s for Joe Biden. I’m trying to get him to debate,” said Trump at a rally earlier this month.The Trump campaign expressed its stance in a letter. “While the Commission on Presidential Debates has already announced three presidential debates and a vice-presidential debate to occur later this year, we are in favor of these debates beginning much earlier,” the letter read.Alyssa Farah-Griffin, former White House communications director during the Trump administration, shared her thoughts. "I think he wants to look like the tough guy who wants to debate, but he has a lot of flexibility to get out of it," she said.Biden has not publicly committed to debating Trump but hasn't ruled it out either. When asked by a reporter last month if he would commit to a debate with Trump, Biden responded, “It depends on his behavior.”
