'Oh no, not my truck': Video shows homeowner confronting thieves trying to steal his vehicle
Eric Smith's home surveillance cameras ended up helping him interrupt an attempt to steal his truck recently."A lot of people are impressed by it, for me, I'm just like, I don't know, I was lucky," Smith told KING. Smith recently moved to his neighborhood in South Hill, Washington, about 40 miles from Seattle. Although his community is normally quiet, he sprung to action when he got a notification on April 3 that his truck door had been opened. "I chased him all the way out into the middle of the street here, where they were parked, and that's what they do — they park in the middle of the street, that way, they're far away from cameras," Smith said. Smith tried to hold one of the thieves down to keep him from getting away, but ended up on the hood of the getaway car when it slammed into his truck. "As I was on the hood, I was like, OK, where am I headed? So I looked back over my shoulder and I was like, oh no, not my truck! And again, this all happened within a split second," he said. Police in Pierce County, where Smith resides, say vehicle thefts increased by 27% in 2023 and residents are becoming frustrated by the trend.Smith said he's grateful he wasn't harmed during the confrontation.Watch the video above to see Smith chase down the would-be thieves.
