What will spring 2024 look like in Oklahoma?

Chief Meteorologist Damon Lane break down what kind of weather Oklahomans can expect this spring

ACTIVE TIME OF THE YEAR FOR SEVERE WEATHER. CHIEF METEOROLOGIST DAMON LANE HAS SOME NEW DATA THAT DAMON SHOWS JUST HOW BUSY IT’S GOING TO BE. THERE’S CERTAINLY A LOT OF NEW DATA COMING IN, SO LET’S JUMP STRAIGHT INTO WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE THIS SPRING. SO APRIL, THIS COOLER WEATHER PATTERN THAT WE’RE DEALING WITH RIGHT NOW WILL LIKELY CONTINUE VIEW AS WE GO INTO THE NEW MONTH. ALTHOUGH TYPICALLY IN APRIL, WE’RE LOOKING AT HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 70S, SO IT’S NOT EXACTLY FREEZING. BUT WE WILL SEE COOLER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES HERE. BUT THE RAIN OUTLOOK NOT ONLY LOOKS REALLY WET FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL, IT LOOKS REALLY, REALLY WET FOR THE METRO NORTH AND WEST. AVERAGE RAIN IN APRIL, TWO AND A HALF TO FOUR INCHES. WE’RE LOOKING AT BEING WELL ABOVE THAT FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL. AS FAR AS YOUR TORNADO THREAT, THOUGH, THE SEASON WILL BEGIN TO RAMP UP, ESPECIALLY AS WE GO IN TOWARDS THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH, WE’RE GOING TO SEE WAVES OF STORM CHANCES, BUT ONE THING THAT IS VERY CONSISTENT IN THE DATA IS THAT WE’RE GOING TO SEE THE STORMS LIKELY TO DEVELOPING WAY OUT TO THE WEST. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOU? IT MEANS MORE LATE NIGHT SEVERE WEATHER THREATS THAN, SAY, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY. THIS COOLER WEATHER PATTERN WILL LIKELY CONTINUE AS WE GO INTO THE MONTH OF MAY. OR I SHOULD SAY BELOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURES, BECAUSE OUR AVERAGE HIGHS IN THE UPPER 70S AND LOWER 80S. SO TEMPERATURES RUNNING JUST A LITTLE BIT COOLER. AND THE REASON IS BECAUSE WE KEEP THE RAIN IN THE FORECAST. MAY IS THE WETTEST MONTH OF THE ENTIRE YEAR. AND WE ARE LOOKING AT WELL ABOVE RAIN CHANCES FOR WESTERN AND NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA AND ABOVE AVERAGE RAIN CHANCES FOR OKC SOUTH AND EAST HERE. SO MAY. THIS IS THE PEAK MONTH OF THE ENTIRE YEAR WHEN IT COMES TO SEVERE WEATHER THREATS, STORMS ARE GOING TO BE FREQUENT. THEY’RE GOING TO BE NUMEROUS. AND ONCE AGAIN STILL WATCHING FOR A LOT OF OUR STORMS TO FORM. WELL OUT TO THE WEST. BUT THINGS BEGIN TO CHANGE IN JUNE AND YOU’RE GOING TO NOTICE IT FIRST. STILL LOOKING AT BELOW AVERAGE TEMPERATURES FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE HERE. BUT BUT WE BEGIN TO WATCH OUR REALLY WET WEATHER PATTERN BEGIN TO RETREAT. WELL OUT TO THE WEST. THE NEWEST DATA SHOWS BELOW AVERAGE RAIN CHANCES EAST OF I 35. AND THAT’S NOT GOOD BECAUSE JUNE SUPPOSED TO BE THE SECOND WETTEST MONTH OF THE ENTIRE YEAR. SO WHEN YOU START TO SEE A DRYING TREND MOVING IN, THAT COULD REALLY BE BAD NEWS FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS. PLENTY OF TIME TO WATCH IT, BUT AS FAR AS A WHAT WE’RE EXPECTING TO SEE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS HERE, WHENEVER YOU HAVE A STRONG EL NINO IN THE WINTERTIME AND IT BEGINS TO FADE AWAY, WE DO SEE A VERY ACTIVE SPRINGTIME ACROSS THE SOUTHERN PLAINS. NOW. WE AVERAGE ABOUT 40 TORNADOES DURING THE SPRINGTIME IN OKLAHOMA. THE LAST STRONG EL NINO WE HAD BACK IN 2016, WE HAD 57 TORNADOES IN THE SPRINGTIME AND THEN IN 2010, WE HAD 97 TORNADOES IN THE SPRINGTIME. SO IF WE USE HISTORY AS A GOOD INDICATOR OF FUTURE PERFORMANCE THIS SPRING IS LIKELY GOING TO BE PRETTY ACTIVE. BUT IT LOOKS LIKE WE MAY KIND OF BASICALLY TAKE ALL OF OUR SEVERE WEATHER AND PUT IT IN THE MONTHS OF APR
