The full autopsy report for Nex Benedict, the nonbinary Owasso high school student who died one day after a fight at school, was released on Wednesday.
Benedict's manner of death was ruled a suicide, with the probable cause of death being diphenhydramine and fluoxetine combined toxicity, according to a report by the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office. Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine to relieve allergies, and fluoxetine is an antidepressant.
Below are the results of the toxicology report:
- Fluoxetine:
- 1.2 mcg/mL - (Hospital Blood A; 02/08/24 at 1600 hrs)
- 1.9 mcg/mL - (Femoral Blood)
2. Norfluoxetine:
- 0.89 mcg/mL - (Hospital Blood A; 02/08/24 at 1600 hrs)
- 1.4 mcg/mL - (Femoral Blood)
3. Diphenhydramine
- 15 mcg/mL - (Hospital Blood A; 02/08/24 at 1600 hrs)
- 25 mcg/mL - (Femoral Blood)
The autopsy found no lethal trauma to Benedict, but some bruises and cuts were found on their body.
Investigators said that Benedict was reported to have headaches and seizure-like activity before they were found unresponsive.
Handwritten notes that were also suggestive of self-harm were found in Benedict's bedroom and provided to law enforcement by their family, according to the report.
Officials with the Owasso Police Department and Owasso Public Schools said Nex Benedict was involved in a fight on Feb. 7 in a bathroom at Owasso High School. Their mother took them to a hospital, where they were examined and discharged.
The next day, authorities received a 911 call from Benedict's mother, saying the 16-year-old needed an ambulance. Court documents said the teenager was posturing and that their hands were curling, their eyes were rolling back, and they had shallow breathing.
They were taken to a hospital, where Benedict was pronounced dead.
The Tulsa County District Attorney's Office announced last week that no charges would be filed in connection to Benedict's death.
