well, tornado seasons here we're right in the middle of our busiest time of the year. And here was first alert storm command. What I wanted to do today was give you a great idea of the devices that you can use to get warnings versus those that you can't. For instance, facebook twitter, instagram Snapchat, social media platforms are not meant to give you a warning and help keep you safe during a storm. Those are great tools after you get the warning. So let's take a look at some of the things that you could use for one. You could use a weather radio that's always helpful. You know, has a weather band, there's programmable ones and that's the ones that I recommend because they help you program your specific county. Another great tool. Now the most everybody has is a cell phone. So we're gonna talk about mobile devices and how to set them up to where you can get the warnings. So we're gonna take a look at the K. O. C. 05 app up in the upper left hand corner, you're gonna find three dashes. You wanna click on those and then click on customize alerts from there. You have a slew of settings and all of these are designed to give you different alerts for different types of products that you might want, for instance, even politics or sports. But when it comes to whether they're at the very top, you have local breaking news, make sure that that toggle is turned on and it turns green for instance on an iphone severe weather alerts. Now the first thing you're gonna get if your location is not turned on is a prompt to turn that on. So you click on settings and you make sure your location is set to always and now guess what you're KOC 05 at. It's going to be able to warn you exactly where you're at. So you can click on storms that are approaching lightning that's nearby watches and warnings you want to make sure that one is turned on because now any time there's a severe weather watch, a tornado watch tornado warning that comes out, your phone is going to alert you. Another beautiful thing about this app is that you can put in three different zip codes for areas that you aren't at. So for instance your kid is in college, you go type in their zip code and any time there's a severe weather warning for that zip code, you're gonna get a notification and that way you can call them and let them know that severe weather is moving into their area. Whenever we go live in our coverage on your phone, you can watch it. And so the one thing you want to make sure of is that you have that local breaking news turned on when you have that turned on the second that we go live on tv. You can actually now watch our coverage when you're in your shelter. Even when you're away from your Tv or perhaps you're out at a baseball game, soccer game. Whatever, you'll still be able to catch the coverage and figure out whether the storm is going to impact you or not. Another great feature on the app is live interactive radar. How do you get there? You click on those three dashes again you click on weather and the plus sign and notice it says radar alerts, closings, map room, weather blog. We'll just click on radar and any time there's a storm in our area you'll be able to track it. Our app will work great at night as well, but only if you don't have, do not disturb or silent turned on on your phone. If you have those, those are going to silence the alerts. So leave those off and just turn your volume down on your phone. But leave your ringer on. And that way you'll still get alerts, it's the same for the W. E. Alerts that come in from the government. Those are not going to break through your do not disturb setting. But do you really want that? You really want those alerts to wake you up at night. And so remember, leave your do not disturb or your silent turned off and just turn your volume down on your phone. Another great tool about R K O C 05 That is the K O C 05 1st alert right along. You know, you get to go basically storm chasing with us. I'm here in Storm Command, but any of our chasers can come up live and you can actually see what we're seeing right there while we're on the storm covering it. So remember the weather radio, but your KO CIO five app and those weather alerts, those are critical, but social media, they're not ever meant to warn you of severe weather. I'll see you out on the road and Storm Command Field meteorologist Michael, Armstrong KSC oh five News.

Step 3

Personalized severe weather alerts can be enabled based on your location, your selected zip codes or both.

If you enable "My Location," you will also need to authorize location tracking in your phone's settings.

For location-based alerts, we'll use your location even when the app isn't open to monitor for severe weather. If an alert is issued, we will send you an alert.

iOS users must grant the Always Allow permission, or else we won't be able to send you alerts when your location changes but the app isn't open. When your location changes significantly, Apple tells us so we can monitor for alerts in your current location. There is a chance that your location change doesn't trigger a push notification for an alert to your new area. This could be related to timing, connectivity or availability of location services.
