The Tecumseh Police Department was contacted just after 10 a.m. by the district's superintendent. The school said they received a report from a parent who had a student on the bus.
The student told the parent the driver smelled like alcohol, according to Tecumseh police. When police arrived on the scene, they arrested the bus driver.
"The Tecumseh Police Department was immediately notified and asked to complete a sobriety test on the driver. The driver was found unfit for duty and removed from the school by the police," said the school district in a statement.
He was booked into the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center on complaints of actual physical control of a motor vehicle and child endangerment.
"The driver was immediately suspended from duty. The district will continue to take appropriate action in this matter according to its policy. The safety of Tecumseh students is a priority, and immediate action will be taken upon reports of any behaviors that may pose a hazard to our students whether on campus or while being transported," said the statement from the school district.
The police department said the man was not only a bus driver for the district, but he was also the bus superintendent who oversees all bus drivers. KOCO has chosen not to release the man's name since he hasn't been formally charged.
"Tecumseh Public Schools believes that it is unacceptable for an employee of the district to endanger our students in any way. We are committed to providing a safe environment for our students and will continue to have zero tolerance for any lesser standard. Thank you for supporting Tecumseh Public Schools," said the statement from the school district.
