Man driving forklift arrested after slow-speed chase through neighborhood
STRANGE SCENE OVERNIGHT. IT WAS JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT AND WE COULD HEAR THE SIRENS, BUT WE COULDN’T TELL WHERE THEY WERE COMING FROM. I JUST KEEP HEARING THEM STRONGER AND STRONGER AND STRONGER. THAT WAS WILD. WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON. NOTHING QUITE PREPARED. PEOPLE IN THE RIVER PARK NEIGHBORHOOD OF SACRAMENTO FOR WHAT THEY WOULD SEE NEXT. I’M SORRY. IT’S JUST FUNNY. A FORKLIFT. I HAD NO IDEA THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE A FORKLIFT. A SLOW SPEED CHASE THAT POLICE SAY STARTED ON FAIR OAKS BOULEVARD NEAR HOWE AVENUE JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT. YOU KNOW THE GUY DRIVING A FORKLIFT THAT’S BLACKED OUT IN THE ROADWAY, THE OFFICER TRIED TO PULL OVER THE FORKLIFT DRIVER. YEAH. HE’S CLEARLY NOT GOING TO STOP. SO I GUESS WE’LL JUST CALL IT A PURSUIT. I’M GOING ABOUT TEN MILES AN HOUR. IT WAS A VERY SLOW CHASE. CHELSEA LIEBER SAW IT ALL UNFOLD. WE JUST COULDN’T BELIEVE IT. NEIGHBORS LISTENED ALONG WITH A POLICE SCANNER APP. WHAT’S THE INDUSTRY STANDARD RUNTIME FOR A FULL PROPANE TANK ON A FORKLIFT. NOT VERY LONG VIDEO FROM JENNIFER BLAKE SHOWED SIX PATROL CARS IN PURSUIT. I WAS KIND OF SHOCKED THAT THEY WERE ALL GOING TO KEEP FOLLOWING LIKE THAT FOR A FORKLIFT OUT NEARBY AT GLEN HALL PARK. A CHAIN LINK FENCE NEEDED REPAIRS TODAY AFTER POLICE SAY THE FORKLIFT DRIVER RAMMED THROUGH IT AND HEADED ONTO THE BIKE PATH ALONG THE AMERICAN RIVER. AND THERE’S ONE BOLLARD WE’RE GOING TO SEE WHAT HE’S GOING TO DO ABOUT IT. CAN YOU SQUEEZE IN BETWEEN IT. HE DID TWO MILES FROM HERE NEAR HOWE AVENUE. THE CHASE ENDED LAST NIGHT WITH AN ARREST, BUT TODAY NEIGHBORS ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT THE STRANGE SCENE. IT WAS A SURREAL MOMENT IN SACRAMENTO. LIZ MITRI, KCRA THREE NEWS. POLICE ARRESTED 47 YEAR OLD WAYNE MATHERNE ON SUSPICION OF EVADING ARREST A

Man driving forklift arrested after slow-speed chase through neighborhood
An overnight slow-speed chase involving a man driving a forklift through a Sacramento neighborhood and onto a bike trail ended with the man's arrest early Monday. Wayne Mathern was taken into custody for evading and resisting arrest and vandalism, Sacramento police said. The situation unfolded just before midnight when officers saw a forklift driving down a main road in Sacramento, police said. Officers tried to make a traffic stop, but the forklift driver continued along the road, police said. "Yeah, he's clearly not going to stop," an officer could be heard saying over the police radio system. "So, I guess we'll just call it a pursuit." The slow-speed pursuit continued as the driver navigated through the River Park neighborhood at around 10 mph, according to the police scanner audio. As sirens blared through the night, residents in the area took to social media to look up what was unfolding and listen along to the police scanner."What's the industry standard runtime for a full propane tank on a forklift?" one officer asked. "Not very long," someone else responded. Other neighbors saw the strange scene firsthand."We were looking out our window, and we could see what looked like a forklift going fairly slow, just kind of casually cruising down our street here, Teichert, and then there was seven cop cars trailing behind it," Chelsea Leber said.Jennifer Blake laughed as she recalled learning why the sirens were going off. "I'm sorry, it's just funny," she said. "A forklift. I had no idea that it was going to be a forklift." Police said the driver rammed through a chain-link fence and then continued onto a bike trail, where he eventually became disabled. Mathern was then taken into custody, police said. It was not immediately clear how he gained access to the forklift or whether it was stolen.
