A rural road just east of Earlsboro was a crime scene late Friday night. A man was found dead outside a property on 3500 Road with a wound to his head.
Deputies said he was attacked.
"Some kind of altercation had taken place, and the victim was struck in the head with an ax," Dinwiddie said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. KOCO 5 was told the victim was staying at a home right next to where the suspect came from.
KOCO 5 will not be naming the suspect until he is formally charged.
"The suspect was staying there at the house with his mother, and then the victim was house-sitting for someone next door," Dinwiddie said.
Then, deputies had to hunt for the suspect. They found him near Interstate 40, miles away from the crime scene.
KOCO 5 was told officials were able to track him down because the suspect called 911 on himself and he had fled on foot.
"We got information that he had called 911 and was walking on I-40 westbound toward the Shawnee area," Dinwiddie said.
Now, deputies are working to find out what led up to this. KOCO 5 was told there were some who saw the entire incident.
"We do have some witnesses that did see the incident that took place," Dinwiddie said.
It's expected the suspect will be formally charged early next week.
