THAT FIRE IS OUT NOW, BUT YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE DAMAGE THAT’S LEFT BEHIND HERE AT A BAR THAT WAS FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE ANCHOR CREWS HERE ON SCENE TELL US THE FIRE STARTED AROUND 630 THIS MORNING WHEN A PASSERBY DRIVING DOWN PORTLAND CALLED 911, SAYING THAT THEY SAW HEAVY SMOKE AND FLAMES. SO WE ARRIVED ON SCENE AND FOUND FIRE ON THE BACKSIDE OF THE STRUCTURE. UNKNOWN CAUSE WE WERE ABLE TO START ON THE EXTERIOR AND MOVE INTERIOR. WE CUT A HOE IN THE IN THE ROOF TO HAVE THE SMOKE ESCAPE FROM THERE. CREWS SAY THEY WERE ABLE TO KNOCK THE FIRE OUT QUICKLY AND THEY SAY THE HEAVY WINDS THAT WE’RE HAVING THIS MORNING ACTUALLY HELPED THEM BECAUSE IT WAS BLOWING ALL OF THE SMOKE AWAY FROM THE FIREFIGHTERS. HOWEVER, WE DID SEE FIRE MARSHALS HERE ON SCENE INVESTIGATING, BUT THEY SAY THEY DON’T THINK THE FIRE IS SUSPICIOUS RIGHT NOW. Authorities said a passerby driving past called 911 after reporting seeing heavy smoke and flames."We arrived on scene and found fire on the back side of the structure," Capt. Jonathan Johnson said. "Unknown cause. We were able to start on the exterior and move to the interior. The fire started around 6:30 a.m. at The Anchor along Portland Avenue just south of Northwest 23rd Street. Authorities said a passerby driving past called 911 after reporting seeing heavy smoke and flames.
