Paralyzed hockey player's rehab videos get attention from Mark Wahlberg
More than two years after Jake Thibeault broke two vertebrae while playing for a youth hockey club during a Labor Day tournament, he is a social media star sharing inspiring videos of his grueling rehabilitation program.
"Two years ago, the unimaginable happened. Life struck me with the biggest piece of adversity I'd ever experienced," Thibeault said.
Thibeault was left paralyzed from the waist down after he went headfirst into the boards following a collision on the ice in 2021.
He missed his final hockey season at Milton Academy, but he made great strides in his recovery and was able to walk across the stage to accept his high school diploma at graduation in June.
"I look how far I've come and realize how far I still have to go," Thibeault said.
Thibeault is now a sophomore at Babson College and shares videos from his therapy sessions, where he spends up to four hours at a time, six days per week.
His most recent video was viewed more than 400,000 times on Instagram alone, getting a huge boost when it was reposted by actor Mark Wahlberg.
"For Jake to have the attitude that he has, at the age that he has, it's just inspiring and we've become good friends," Wahlberg said.
Recently, Thibeault's hard work was rewarded when, while practicing how to walk, one of the muscles in his hip briefly started contracting for the first time since his accident.
"It gave me a little hope," he said.
Thibeault is now playing his golf and his dream of joining Babson's hockey team has come true, even if he doesn't yet lace up his skates.
"Along with working out every day, I want to make sure to live the fullest life," he said. "I think I've achieved that."
