Paralyzed hockey player's rehab videos get attention from Mark Wahlberg
OUR DAVID BIENICK TELLS US ALL ABOUT IT. FROM HIS WHEELCHAIR. JAKE TEBOW LOOKS AT BABSON COLLEGE’S ICE RINK WHERE HE’D ONCE DREAMED ABOUT PLAYING HOCKEY UNTIL A NASTY FALL ON THE ICE. TWO YEARS AGO CREATED A FRACTURE IN MY T7 AND T8 VERTEBRAE WHICH HIT MY SPINAL CORD. DESPITE BEING PARALYZED FROM THE WAIST DOWN. JUST A FEW MONTHS LATER, JAKE USED LEG BRACES TO WALK ACROSS THE STAGE AT HIS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION. I DEFINITELY ACCOMPLISHED MY GOAL AND I WAS I LEVEL AND I RECEIVED MY DIPLOMA ON MY OWN, DETERMINED TO MAKE EVEN MORE PROGRESS, JAKE RECENTLY POSTED THIS VIDEO OF HIS GRUELING PHYSICAL THERAPY WORKOUT. IT’S UP TO FOUR HOURS A DAY, SIX DAYS A WEEK. AND I LOOK HOW FAR I’VE COME. AND REALLY SO FAR, I STILL HAVE TO GO. JAKE’S VIDEO HAS NOW BEEN VIEWED MORE THAN 400,000 TIMES ON INSTAGRAM ALONE, AND IT RECENTLY GOT A BOOST WHEN IT WAS REPOSTED BY MARK WAHLBERG. FOR JAKE TO HAVE THE ATTITUDE THAT HE HAS AT THE AGE THAT HE HAS, IT’S JUST VERY INSPIRING. AND WE’VE BECOME WE’VE BECOME GOOD FRIENDS RECENTLY, JAKE’S HARD WORK WAS REWARDED IN ANOTHER WAY WHILE PRACTICING TO WALK A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, ONE OF THE MUSCLES IN HIS HIP BRIEFLY STARTED CONTRACTING AGAIN. GAVE ME A LITTLE HOPE, LIKE, ALL RIGHT, THERE’S SOMETHING FIRING DOWN THERE. JAKE IS NOW PLAYING GOLF AND HIS DREAM OF JOINING THE BABSON COLLEGE HOCKEY TEAM ACTUALLY CAME TRUE, EVEN IF HE DOESN’T YET LACE UP HIS SKATES ALONG WITH WORKING OUT EVERY DAY. I WANT TO MAKE SURE TO LIVE THE FULLEST LIFE AND I THINK I’VE ACHIEVED THAT. I POSTED THE VIDEO TO SHOW PEOPLE LIKE WHAT THEY’RE HELPING ME ACHIEVE PHYSICALLY, PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY, TOO. JAKE SAYS. BECAUSE IF THERE’S ONE THING THIS YOUNG MAN HAS LEARNED IN THE PAST TWO YEARS, IT’S THAT NO ONE ACHIEVES THESE KINDS OF GOALS ALL ON THEIR OWN. IN WELLESLEY DAVID BIENICK WCVB

Thibeault was left paralyzed from the waist down after he went headfirst into the boards following a collision on the ice in 2021.

He missed his final hockey season at Milton Academy, but he made great strides in his recovery and was able to walk across the stage to accept his high school diploma at graduation in June.

"I look how far I've come and realize how far I still have to go," Thibeault said.

Thibeault is now a sophomore at Babson College and shares videos from his therapy sessions, where he spends up to four hours at a time, six days per week.

His most recent video was viewed more than 400,000 times on Instagram alone, getting a huge boost when it was reposted by actor Mark Wahlberg.

"For Jake to have the attitude that he has, at the age that he has, it's just inspiring and we've become good friends," Wahlberg said.

Recently, Thibeault's hard work was rewarded when, while practicing how to walk, one of the muscles in his hip briefly started contracting for the first time since his accident.

"It gave me a little hope," he said.

Thibeault is now playing his golf and his dream of joining Babson's hockey team has come true, even if he doesn't yet lace up his skates.

"Along with working out every day, I want to make sure to live the fullest life," he said. "I think I've achieved that."
