WEATHER SERVICE. WELL, GUYS, WHEN YOU SEE THOSE WILD HEAT INDEX NUMBERS LIKE TODAY AT 112 DEGREES, THOSE ARE TAKEN IN THE SHADE. SO IT’S NOT AS HOT. BUT WHEN YOU STEP OUT IN THE SUN, IT GETS HOTTER. THAT’S WHAT’S CAUSING LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO SWITCH GEARS IN THE HEAT. WE CERTAINLY DON’T RECOMMEND PLAYING OUT OR BEING OUTSIDE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS IN THIS LEVEL OF HEAT. TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT INDICES, MULTIPLE DAYS IN A ROW NOT LETTING UP THIS WEEK, FORCING SEVERAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO SHIFT RECESS DEPENDING ON THE THE ACTUAL AIR TEMPERATURE. PLUS THE HEAT INDEX WILL DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT WE WE RECOMMEND THAT THEY CAN GO OUTDOORS OR GO OUTDOORS UNDER CAUTION OR WE NEED TO GO INDOORS. JUST OVER THE WEEKEND. EMSA RESPONDED TO 17 HEAT RELATED CALLS AND TOOK TEN OF THEM TO THE HOSPITAL IN OKC. NORMAN DEER CREEK AND YUKON PUBLIC SCHOOLS ALL SHIFTED TO INDOOR RECESS. MOORE PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAS MODIFIED RECESS, MEANING STUDENTS CAN PLAY OUTDOORS FOR UP TO 15 MINUTES. OKARCHE PUBLIC SCHOOLS EVEN SHIFTING THEIR BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL GAMES MONDAY NIGHT BECAUSE OF THE EXTREME HEAT, THERE ARE ONLY SHORT WINDOWS OF TIME THIS TIME OF YEAR WHERE IT’S OKAY TO BE OUTSIDE, MAYBE BEFORE 10:00 IN THE MORNING OR MAYBE INTO THE EVENING SOMETIME, BUT DURING THE SCHOOL DAY, THERE’S NOT A LOT OF SAFE TIMES TO BE OUT THERE AND WAYS TO STAY SAFE IN THIS EXTREME HEAT IS TO LIMIT TIME OUTDOORS, OF COURSE.
