Severe storms with significant risk moving into Oklahoma Tuesday night

KOCO 5 Meteorologist Jonathan Conder shows when you can expect severe storms in your area

WEATHER, SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE 852 ON THIS TUESDAY EVENING. METEOROLOGIST JONATHAN CONDER HERE. MOST OF US ARE PRETTY QUIET. I’M NOT GOING TO COVER UP IN YOUR PROGRAMING, BUT I GOT TO GIVE YOU AN UPDATE WITH THIS STORM UP IN NORTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA. HARPER COUNTY, SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING TILL 9 P.M., VERY STRONG WINDS POSSIBLE WITH HAIL SIZE IS INCREASING. SO YOU CAN SEE THIS IS BEGINNING OF WHAT WE’D CALL A BOW ECHOES RIGHT ON THE LEADING EDGE HERE. AND THIS IS RIGHT ON THE KANSAS BORDER. IT’S VERY RURAL, BUT WE’RE WATCHING IT. SO POTENTIAL FOR WINDS UP TO ABOUT 70 MILES AN HOUR AND ABOUT 1 TO 2 INCH HAIL POSSIBLE. THIS WILL LIKELY SAY NORTH OF BUFFALO, BUT TECHNICALLY, BUFFALO, YOU’RE IN THE WARNING. LET’S CHECK IN WITH DERIK KLINE, WHICH IS COME DOWN THE HIGHWAY HERE BETWEEN BOSTON AND BUFFALO. WHAT KIND OF WINDS HAVE YOU HAD ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THAT STORM, DEREK YEAH. JONATHAN SO ON THE SOUTH SIDE ABOUT I WOULD SAY ABOUT 5 TO 10 MINUTES AGO, WE HAD WINDS 50 TO 60MPH OR SO. DEFINITELY VERY, VERY CLOSE IF NOT SEVERE WIND GUST WITH THIS THUNDERSTORM. AND THAT’LL PROBABLY MOVE INTO OR VERY CLOSE TO BUFFALO. SO YOU’RE LOOKING AT BUFFALO IS STRAIGHT AHEAD OF MY SHOT. THERE. YOU CAN SEE KIND OF THE CLEARING SKIES OUT AHEAD OF THE THE FRONT OF THIS STORM HERE. AND SO THERE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT RIGHT NOW. BUT AGAIN, WE CAN SEE DUST UP THERE IN THE FOREGROUND IN FRONT OF US RIGHT NOW. SO WE KNOW THE WIND IS BLOWING. THERE’S A PRETTY STRONG GUST FRONT HEADED INTO BUFFALO HERE IN JUST THE NEXT COUPLE OF MINUTES AND IT’S NOT ALREADY THERE. SO WE’LL CONTINUE TO WATCH THAT AS WE HEAD INTO BUFFALO. WE’LL LET YOU KNOW WHAT WE SEE BACK TO YOU. ALL RIGHT. APPRECIATE THAT. THERE, DEREK. AND THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE JUST KIND OF READING SOME OF THEIR DISCUSSIONS. REMEMBER, THEY ISSUE THE WARNINGS THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT IN THIS WARNING POTENTIAL UPPING THE WIND VELOCITIES, WHICH RIGHT HERE THIS COULD BE AN AREA WHERE WE’RE SEEING WINDS ON THE NOSE OF THE BOW ECHO ABOUT 80 MILES AN HOUR. SO WE’RE APPROACHING DESTRUCTIVE WINDS AGAIN. THIS IS GOING TO BE NORTH OF HIGHWAY 64, CROSSING HIGHWAY 183. THAT’S THE STATE LINE RIGHT THERE. NOW, THE STORM MOVEMENT IS EAST AND SPEEDING UP WHAT WILL LIKELY HAPPEN WITH THESE STORMS THROUGHOUT THE EVENING, THE BOW WILL START TURNING TO THE RIGHT AND HOOK BACK DOWN INTO OKLAHOMA. SO IT MIGHT RIDE THE STATE BORDER THERE FOR LIKE ABOUT 30 MINUTES TO AN HOUR AND WE’LL PROBABLY HAVE SOME MORE BACK BUILDING BACK TO THE WEST. AND AGAIN, WINDS COMING OUT OF THIS, BUT IT’LL EVENTUALLY TURN TO THE RIGHT AND COME INTO NORTH CENTRAL OKLAHOMA. SO, YOU KNOW, COULD WE HAVE THOSE KIND OF WINDS COMING IN TO WOODWARD? ABSOLUTELY. MAYBE NOT WITH TONGA, BUT GOT TO WATCH ALVA AND ENID PONCA CITY PERRY. SO THAT’S GOING TO TAKE A COUPLE HOURS HERE. BUT WE’RE WATCHING, AGAIN, VERY CALM, PACKED, BUT POTENT STORM. SO IT’S NOT ABOUT HOW BIG IT IS. IT’S ABOUT WHAT’S INSIDE OF IT. OKAY. LET’S GO TO THE WATCH HERE. SO THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT WATCH. TWO OVER ON THE WEATHER MAPS. THIS IS FOR THE COUNTIES HIGHLIGHTED IN BLUE. AND THAT’S GOING TO BE UNTIL 2:00 TOMORROW MORNING. THAT’S WEDNESDAY MORNING AT THIS TIME. DOES NOT INCLUDE OKC CUTS OFF RIGHT AT WATERLOO. SO THAT’S A LOGAN COUNTY AND BACK TO THE WEST. BUT I FEEL LIKE WE HAVE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING WINDS UP TO OR NEAR 100 MILES AN HOUR IN THE WATCH. ALL RIGHT AS THE STORMS TRACK TO THE NORTH, EVEN THOUGH THE STORMS MAY COME INTO OKC, WE COULD HAVE DAMAGING WIND GUSTS. A GUST FRONT COMING INTO OKC. THAT’S GOING TO BE A LITTLE BIT LATER TONIGHT IN A COUPLE OF HOURS. BUT WE’RE WATCHING IT VERY CLOSELY. AND WE’RE GOING TO WALK THESE STORMS AS THEY MOVE ACROSS THE STATE.
