A Kansas bank robbery suspect is dead after a law enforcement search Friday afternoon in northern Oklahoma.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol officials said authorities were searching for a suspect in connection with a bank robbery in Wellington, Kansas. The suspect was in a silver Chrysler 300, was considered armed and was last seen in Oklahoma headed southbound on I-35 at the Oklahoma-Kansas state line.
Troopers said the suspect was carrying $5,000 into Oklahoma, he was armed and told a teller he had a bomb. When authorities spotted the car, they said the suspect immediately began shooting at them.
OHP began chasing the suspect until a tactical intervention stopped the car. Authorities said the suspect then ran out of his car and started firing at troopers again until the troopers ultimately shot and killed him.
OHP officials initially told KOCO 5 that the suspect was down, later confirming that he was dead.
No OHP troopers were injured in the shooting.
The U.S. Highway 412 ramp is closed on northbound Interstate 35 north of Perry because of a police investigation. Authorities urge motorists to avoid the area and find an alternate route.
The Oklahoma bomb squad is inspecting the suspect's car and checking for any kind of validity to the claims that the suspect had a bomb.
