Oklahoma City Thunder signs 2013 Euroleague draft pick Alex Abrines
The Oklahoma City Thunder has reached an agreement with 2013 draft pick and Euroleague player Alex Abrines, the team announced Saturday.
“We are pleased to welcome Alex to the Thunder organization,” Thunder General Manager Sam Presti said in a news release. “He brings a unique blend of international experience and skill for his age. He will continue to add depth and versatility to our core of perimeter players.”
The Thunder signed Abrines, 22, to a three-year, $18 million deal, ESPN reported earlier in the week, but the team has not disclosed the terms of the deal.
Abrines, a 6-foot-6 guard, has spent the past three seasons with FC Barcelona after being drafted by Oklahoma City in 2013. He was given the Euroleague Rising Star award last season, when he averaged 9.3 points per game.
According to ESPN, Abrines' signing may have been influenced by Kevin Durant's departure, and could mean Dion Waiters will not be signed by the team.
Abrines will play for Spain in the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to join an organization like the Oklahoma City Thunder,” Abrines said. “I look forward to meeting my teammates and contributing any way that I can as a member of the team.”
