The final seconds of an Oklahoma state Class 3A quarterfinals basketball game may be some of the most heart-wrenching in history.Leading 37-36 over the Millwood Falcons with 3.7 seconds left, Hugo Buffaloes' point guard Trey Johnson took an in-bound pass and made a layup -- into the wrong basket.A stunned crowd at Yukon High School saw the unthinkable on Thursday night, realizing Johnson's basket had given Millwood a 38-37 victory. Millwood's season continues in the semifinals of the Oklahoma playoffs.Hugo's season ends at 21-8.The Buffaloes went home to Choctaw County with the loss, but their winning outlook is inspiring the state."We pride ourselves on being a tight-knit family, helping each other out through tough times, and this is just one of those tough times," said head coach Darnell Shanklin.During the game, it all came down to time. With just 3.7 seconds left on the clock, the game seemed pretty much decided."We've got a one-point lead and the ball. Called timeout, set up for a play that I thought would give us a chance just to get the ball in and hold the ball and win the ball game," Shanklin said.But that's not what happened."Tough, tough loss for all of our players, fans and everybody, but things happen," Shanklin said.Now, it's about moving forward."That's what basketball and sports is all about. It's about teaching you things and how to deal with adversity, and that's what we've talked about as a team. We've got to be able to work through things like this," he said.Hugo is a 3A team from the southeast part of Oklahoma that is known for playing a tough schedule each year, a schedule chock-full of teams from larger classes.The Buffaloes definitely plan to be back at the state tourney."You can always count on Hugo to be right there in the mix, so we'll be back," Shanklin said.
